Reflections on Parenting and LGBTQIA+ Rights in America

I’m a queer parent raising three children, including a transgender daughter. My partner and I navigate a long-distance relationship—I’m based in a progressive area of the Northeast, while she resides in a conservative Southern region. In America, each state has the autonomy to create its own laws on critical issues like housing, employment, healthcare, and marriage, resulting in a patchwork of protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Some states are more welcoming than others, but federal protections are essential to counteract state-level discrimination. The previous administration actively sought to undermine these protections, whereas Joe Biden is poised to be the most supportive president for the LGBTQIA+ community in history. This has a profound impact on my family’s life.

The Impact of Political Leadership

While Trump’s presidency was marked by a significant number of anti-LGBTQIA+ actions—recording 180 instances of discrimination and rolling back vital protections—Biden aims to reverse this trend. His proposed Equality Act, which he intends to push through in his first 100 days, would provide comprehensive protections against discrimination in various aspects of life, including education, work, and public services. Currently, LGBTQIA+ individuals often rely on outdated civil rights laws that don’t explicitly protect sexual orientation or gender identity, leaving many cases of discrimination unaddressed. Biden’s commitment includes directing his Cabinet to enforce the Equality Act across all federal agencies.

Diversity in Leadership

Biden’s administration reflects diversity, with notable appointments including transgender leaders like Shawn Skelly and Dr. Rachel Levine. His respect for LGBTQIA+ advocates, such as Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride, ensures that the voices of marginalized communities are considered. Biden plans to not only introduce new protections but also dismantle harmful policies established during the Trump era, such as the military ban on transgender individuals and discriminatory practices in healthcare.

A Moment of Hope

His acknowledgment of transgender voters during his acceptance speech was a moment of hope for many, including me. I finally felt recognized by someone in power. I now have hope that my daughter will receive necessary medical care, including hormone blockers, when she needs them, and that our insurance will support these needs.

Looking Ahead

While I understand that Biden cannot accomplish everything in his agenda, his focus on addressing the various challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community—such as violence, homelessness, and mental health—is encouraging. Instead of bracing for the next wave of anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation, I look forward to the opportunities that a more inclusive government can provide. Joe Biden is actively working to rewrite the narrative for families like mine, and I genuinely hope this will lead to lasting change.
