Just kidding (sort of). Fans of the Shondaland Regency-era series will be thrilled to hear that the show has officially been renewed for a second season.
Given the incredible success of the first season and the fact that the series is based on a collection of eight novels, the renewal news may come as no surprise. Yet, it’s still wonderfully exciting. The first season followed the eldest Bridgerton daughter, Daphne, on her quest for romance, mirroring the storyline of the first book, The Duke and I. In the second season, the spotlight will shift to the eldest son, Anthony, as he navigates his love life, which is detailed in The Viscount Who Loved Me, part of Julia Quinn’s bestselling series.
The announcement was made in true Bridgerton fashion, through a notice from Lady Whistledown herself.
“The ton is abuzz with the latest gossip, and it is my honor to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season. I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion,” the notice stated.
“The incomparable cast of Bridgerton will return to production in the Spring of 2021. This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season. I will have my pen ready to report on any and all of his romantic activities,” it continued.
“However, gentle reader, before you set the comments section alight with requests for more sordid details, know that I am disinclined to report on the particulars at this time. Patience, after all, is a virtue.”
With filming scheduled to commence this spring, we can soon immerse ourselves in Regency London once again. While the second season will center on Viscount Bridgerton, Anthony, as he embarks on his quest for a wife, the entire cast from the first season is expected to return. This means more of Simon and Daphne, because we all know you were curious—particularly about Simon, let’s be honest… whew.
Casting is currently underway for several new characters, most notably the female lead opposite Anthony Bridgerton—Ms. Kate Sheffield. (This isn’t a spoiler; the books have been out for two decades, and it’s a romance adaptation, so there will always be a “happily ever after.”)
Although we all adored Simon, Jonathan Bailey’s Anthony also showcased an intriguing storyline, and it’s only set to get more exciting. The plot for the second season was hinted at in the final moments of the first season finale when Anthony shared his intentions of “finding and promptly declaring my intentions to my new viscountess.”
Bridgerton has rapidly become a pop culture phenomenon since its Christmas Day debut, and rightfully so—it’s the first time in a long while that a romance has taken center stage, especially a romance adaptation of a novel that has historically faced disdain. Some people fancy themselves “elitist book snobs” for dismissing romance novels, but really, they’re just missing out on the joy of reading for pleasure.
Anyway, Bridgerton is an absolute delight, and we can’t wait to discover the romantic entanglements and family hijinks that await us in season two.
