It’s Inauguration Day, and excitement is in the air as we look forward to brighter days. Our children are observing this significant moment, and after four years of challenges, it’s time for them to celebrate alongside us. Fortunately, the Biden Inauguration Team has organized a variety of engaging activities for kids to learn and enjoy this momentous day.

Livestream for Young Americans

The Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC) is introducing a unique “curated livestream for young Americans” that will take place before and during the Inaugural Ceremonies, where President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be sworn in. Hosted by the talented Keke Palmer, this livestream will feature a special message from the new First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, and insightful commentary from historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Erica Armstrong Dunbar.

Presidential Pets Segment

One particularly exciting segment for our little ones is a feature on presidential pets, brought to us by Nickelodeon. This means they will get to learn about Champ and Major Biden, the new First Pets of the White House, along with stories of other famous dogs that have resided in the People’s House—excluding Trump, who was one of only two presidents without a dog in the White House.

Student Voices and Educational Features

Kids can also look forward to “excerpts of student voices” from the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs’ ‘We the Young People’ programming, which includes fun trivia questions posed by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, segments created by the Library of Congress, and other special features.

Tune In

Tune in to the livestream at BidenInaugural.org/youth on Wednesday, January 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern. It will also be available on Nickelodeon, Discovery Education, Amazon Prime Video, and various other websites, apps, and social media platforms. PBS NewsHour will stream it online, and a Spanish-language broadcast will air on Discovery Familia later in the day.

Additional Resources for Families

Additional resources are available for families, including a downloadable coloring book at BidenInaugural.org/coloringbook. Discovery’s “I Do Solemnly Swear” program offers access to this historic event through interviews with inaugural experts and even a greeting from First Lady Jill Biden, which premiered yesterday and is available on YouTube. PBS has also assembled an educational collection of “classroom-ready resources about U.S. presidential inaugurations” through PBS LearningMedia, offering educators interdisciplinary resources, media clips, and primary source materials to help students in grades 4-12 understand the significance of presidential inaugurations.
