9 Reasons I’m Not Prepared for Back to School

As summer winds down, I can’t help but notice the excitement radiating from other parents about the new school year. Am I the only one feeling a bit hesitant? As a work-from-home mom, I definitely see the perks of those six uninterrupted hours: quieter surroundings, less clutter, fewer squabbles, and an opportunity to focus on my work. Still, there are some significant hurdles I’m dreading.

  1. Mornings are my kryptonite. I’ve finally settled into a groove of working late into the night and sleeping in until the late morning. My kids have mastered the art of morning independence; they turn on the TV, prepare breakfast, and let me enjoy my slumber. Now, I must face the harsh reality of early wake-ups and abandon my cherished night owl routine. Yikes.
  2. Getting my son ready is a circus act. Getting my grumpy son out of bed is a feat worthy of a superhero. After a battle to wake him up, he stares blankly at his oatmeal, while I urgently shovel food into him to prevent a mid-morning meltdown at school. He requires a detailed plan just to get dressed correctly (hint: underwear first, buddy!). Meanwhile, my daughter, who has already dressed herself, looks on with a mix of pride and mockery.
  3. Lunches before coffee? No thanks! Sure, I could prepare my kids’ lunches the night before, but let’s be honest—I’m not that organized. The chaotic school cafeteria food is another topic entirely, but let’s just say I prefer the homemade stuff. Yet here I am, scrambling to make lunches before I’ve even had my morning caffeine fix.
  4. School grooming is a whole new ball game. During the lazy summer months, we got away with unkempt hair and infrequent baths (thank you, pool!). But as school starts, I can feel the judgment from teachers and other parents looming. I can already feel the anxiety creeping in about keeping up with hygiene and appearance.
  5. Closed-toed shoes are back. After a summer spent in comfy flip-flops and Crocs, my kids are suddenly thrust into the torture of proper footwear. “These shoes are uncomfortable, Mommy!” is going to be the new battle cry. And of course, socks never feel right—there’s always some kind of issue that we need to solve.
  6. Over-scheduled chaos. The sheer thought of syncing all the appointments and commitments into my calendar is exhausting. Summer has been a blissful free-for-all, but school brings a barrage of activities, meetings, and deadlines. It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. I might need a calmative just to cope.
  7. Homework? Really? Didn’t my kids just spend six hours at school? Apparently, that wasn’t enough learning, so now we have to drag out homework at home while I juggle dinner prep and laundry. I thought I left homework behind after college!
  8. Early bedtimes are back on the agenda. No more late-night back rubs in exchange for keeping the kids up later. They actually need their sleep to function, which means earlier bedtimes for all of us. I’ll miss those quiet moments of nighttime bonding.
  9. Fundraising fatigue. “Here’s a check, school. Please just leave me alone!” The endless requests for donations and fundraising efforts are draining.

If I’m being honest, I’ll miss my kids while they’re at school. Yes, I often complain about the chaos they bring, but I genuinely enjoy having them around during the summer months—not to mention the luxury of sleeping in!
