There’s something uniquely refreshing about summer. This time of year is ideally meant for relaxation, fun, and a more carefree spirit. However, like many, I kicked off this summer with an ambitious list of self-improvement goals, including exercising, eating healthier, and feeling great in my swimsuit.
But, as summer often does, it led me astray. I indulged in cake and sipped on Arnold Palmers instead of shedding those extra pounds. In fact, I think I’ve even gained five pounds as the season rolls on. And you know what? I just don’t care.
Instead of hiding behind a cover-up and choosing a book in the shade, I embraced my bathing suit with a drink in hand, radiating confidence. The sun? Yes, please. I traded in my oversized hat and SPF 80 for some quality sun-soaking, and while I might be courting premature aging (whatever that entails), I just don’t care.
By mid-June, I ditched the makeup, thanks to my bronzed glow. A mere five minutes was all I needed to get ready for outings—grocery shopping, church, and even restaurants. I encountered familiar faces without a hint of embarrassment, engaging in friendly chats face-to-face. Simply put, I just don’t care.
Instead of obsessing over my “Healthy Recipes” Pinterest board for clever ways to sneak spinach into smoothies or lighten up desserts, I whipped up hearty batches of tacos, spaghetti, and fried chicken. My kids rejoiced at the influx of ice cream sandwiches and barbecue chips. Junk food became the norm, and I just don’t care.
I let my kids sleep wherever they dropped, be it the couch, the floor, or even the hammock. Late-night TV marathons and sleeping in became our routine. I even indulged in cake for breakfast—a terrible habit, I know, but again, I really don’t care.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t completely lazy this summer. I found time for exercise, but it was a relaxed approach—long, casual walks with friends. My goal was simply to feel good and live longer, not to sculpt the perfect beach body. Because honestly, I just do not care.
This has truly been the summer of not caring, and it’s been nothing short of glorious. The best part? Turns out, nobody else really cares either. For all the indulgence, my kids appear happier and healthier than ever. There hasn’t been a call from the food police, nor a visit from social services.
Surprisingly, my new, relaxed poolside self is more appealing. My partner hasn’t even noticed the extra five pounds; in fact, he enjoys our poolside hangouts and appreciates my look in a swimsuit. He thinks I’m just as beautiful without makeup.
Regrettably, summer won’t last forever, especially this carefree version. My kids can’t continue their spontaneous napping and chip-eating marathons, nor can I maintain my cake-for-breakfast lifestyle. Still, I hope to carry a slice of this summer’s spirit into the rest of the year, embracing a more laid-back attitude as I prepare for an imperfect Thanksgiving and a relaxed Christmas.
