“These are the things that occur when a sacred landslide election victory is unceremoniously and ruthlessly taken from devoted citizens who have been treated unfairly for far too long. Go home with love & peace. Remember this day forever!” This was the now-deleted tweet from President Donald J. Trump following the Capitol insurrection.
While it’s easy to erase such posts from social media (and I’ve argued that his account should have been silenced long before this due to the spread of falsehoods), we must not wipe this moment from our collective memory. Instead, we should commemorate it, recognizing that this day could either signify the moment MAGA hit its lowest point, prompting those bound to it (or to its “base”) to finally reject and condemn it, or it could represent the day our democracy — which we’ve taken for granted, convinced it would endure — officially faltered.
I hope for the former outcome, or at least the beginning of it. Once we move past this dark chapter in our history, we will need to engage in profound self-reflection. We must ponder why this nation was so susceptible to the rise of a demagogue, why so many felt beholden to someone whose values did not align with theirs, why we have an unquenchable thirst for conspiracy theories, and why, despite all the discussions across various media, we failed to truly listen to one another.
However, that exploration can wait for another day when we have moved beyond this crisis. For now, it’s our responsibility to assert a clear message: No!
No, Mr. Leader. These are not mere “things and events” that happen. These are the consequences when a republic devolves into a cult of personality. When an individual — particularly this one — is idolized. When we attach our country’s identity to a single leader, waving flags in homage to a person rather than to an idea or principle.
No, Mr. Leader, these events are not just part of the game of defeat. They arise from a denial of shared reality, where civil, partisan discourse on policy is replaced with a battle over the very nature of truth. It’s when we consume alternative facts, turning to memes and social media not as entertainment but as sources of actual information.
No, Mr. Leader, “great patriots” are not the property of one faction. These events occur when we label our opponents as “evil” or “sick” or merely as “the opposition.” We were meant to have differing philosophies and paths, not divergent objectives.
No, Mr. Leader, this election was not “stolen.” It was lost. There is no conspiracy among the legislative, state, and judicial branches against you. The reality is that more people disapprove of you than support you, more recognize your threat than those who don’t or who accept it in exchange for your policies and favors.
No, Mr. Leader, you do not get to define what is sacred. What’s sacred is the agreement we share with all 44 of your predecessors and that we will have again with your successor. The agreement with a leader who sees citizens, not partisans, who prioritizes the job over the (tweeted) jabs.
So yes, Mr. Leader. Let’s “remember this day forever.” Let’s remember it as the day we declare enough is enough. Let’s remember it as a bipartisan rejection of tyranny, treason, and sedition — terms we often hesitate to utter. Let’s remember this day as one where even more of us than the 81,283,485 who turned against you in November reject you and your distorted version of “patriotism” once and for all. Let’s remember this day as the moment Congress, despite your efforts, renounced their earlier (and unfounded) objections and resumed their duty — the people’s duty — in formalizing the election of Joe Biden. Let’s remember this day as the one when we united to say no, once and for all.

In summary, this moment in history calls for reflection and action. It urges us to reject the culture of personality that has overtaken our democracy and strive for a more unified, truthful discourse.
