According to reports, 53-year-old Max Thompson, who has faced homelessness for much of his life, was on his way to walk his dog, a pitbull named Rocky, when he spotted the fire. Without hesitation, he rushed into the smoke-filled building. “I was terrified, but I couldn’t just stand by when I knew those animals were in danger. God put me there for a reason,” Max shared. “If you can love a dog, you can love anyone. My dog is my best friend, and I had to save all the others.”
The shelter expressed their gratitude on social media, thanking Max for his bravery and acknowledging the quick response of the fire department and animal control. “Thanks to our guardian angel, all our animals are safe,” the shelter posted.
Gracie Bell, the founder of the shelter, noted that Max has been a familiar face around the facility, where he has sometimes helped with odd jobs. “The firefighters were hesitant to handle the dogs, but Max was already inside rescuing them,” she explained. “He saved 6 dogs and 10 cats, and I can’t thank him enough.”
A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Max has already raised over $58,000. Organizer Frank Cote is working on a plan to ensure the funds are managed carefully, considering Max’s complicated situation with homelessness. “I’m still in shock because I know how quickly fires can spread. He truly is my hero,” Gracie added.
