A Canadian advertising firm has crafted the PSA we all needed to bid farewell to 2020 in the way it truly deserves.

So, about 2020, right? To put it lightly, this year has been an utter disaster, a chaotic blend of grief, illness, wildfires, and yes, even murder hornets. How does one encapsulate the apocalyptic nature of this year? Thankfully, a group of creative individuals has tackled that task head-on. Introducing a Toronto-based ad agency and their PSA aimed at giving 2020 the send-off it warrants.

In a brilliantly cathartic 90-second clip, numerous people express a shared global sentiment: “Screw you, 2020, along with all the nonsense you brought.” This is genuinely the only “year in review” that makes any sense after these grueling twelve months.

“Let’s kick things off with a huge, ‘Screw you, Covid-19!’” a healthcare worker declares from outside a hospital.

“Thanks for taking my job,” another person chimes in, sitting in front of his house.

“Thanks for shutting down his school,” a mom states, standing in her son’s bedroom doorway. “Yeah, screw you!” he responds from his bed, facing a laptop. All the parents and kids dealing with virtual schooling will certainly resonate with that.

The PSA continues with a couple lamenting their wedding being ruined, a man on the toilet cursing toilet paper hoarders (remember those?), and individuals hurling their “screw yous” at figures like Senator Mike Connors, Derek Chauvin, and anyone who uttered “all lives matter” this year.

“All lives will truly matter when black lives matter,” one woman aptly points out.

Overall, the PSA throws a total of 31 “screw yous” at 2020 (maybe 32—the last one is a bit muffled). There are also plenty of middle fingers directed at this terrible year. While it’s impossible to include all 7 billion people on the planet in a short video, I feel this clip perfectly captures my feelings, and I’m more than happy to let these 32 individuals speak on my behalf. I suspect many will echo the same sentiment.

The PSA, developed by Public in Toronto, stands out not just for its “screw you” to 2020—though that’s certainly warranted this year—but because it serves a meaningful purpose.

“This year, everyone could use a little extra help,” the PSA concludes, encouraging viewers to send a middle finger emoji to a number to contribute to the Mental Health Coalition (in the U.S.) or the Black Health Alliance (in Canada). Both organizations provide crucial mental health support, especially for the most vulnerable during 2020. That’s a cause we can all support during this year.
