A man tragically died mid-flight after reportedly failing to disclose his potential COVID-19 symptoms, according to reports. His wife was heard telling first responders that he had been experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus, including loss of taste and smell, prior to boarding the aircraft. Despite this, they did not communicate these issues at check-in.
This incident occurred on a United Airlines flight traveling from Orlando to Los Angeles, which was forced to make an emergency landing in New Orleans due to the man’s cardiac arrest. Medical professionals suggested that COVID-19 complications might have contributed to his heart attack. However, the airline stated they could not confirm the presence of the virus since the man had not been tested.
A United Airlines spokesperson mentioned that the passenger had acknowledged on their “Ready-to-Fly” checklist that he had not been diagnosed with COVID-19 and did not exhibit any related symptoms at the time. After receiving further information, it became clear that he had misstated his health status. The family also mentioned pre-existing health conditions, including high blood pressure and respiratory issues.
In light of this unfortunate event, United Airlines urged travelers to refrain from flying if they have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or exhibit symptoms. They emphasized the importance of testing when in doubt. Following the incident, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) contacted the airline to assist with contact tracing efforts for passengers who may have been exposed.
Passengers on the flight were given the option to disembark and take a later flight or continue to Los Angeles; all chose to proceed. The news of the possible exposure rapidly circulated on social media, with some suggesting that the family was returning from a trip to Disney World, based on the bags they had with them.
It remains unclear whether the CDC was able to reach all passengers aboard the flight. For more information on home insemination, you can check out this post here.
