In today’s world, the landscape of motherhood and work is continuously evolving. While traditional categories like Stay-at-Home Moms (SAHMs) and Working Moms have their merits, I often find these labels too confining. I relate to each of these roles in different ways, but my unique experience has led me to introduce a new classification: the Do-It-All Sort of Mom, or DIASOM.
The DIASOM embodies the essence of multitasking, drawing elements from various mom work identities. Like many DIASOMs, I juggle multiple roles without fully committing to one, resembling the shopper who tries on countless outfits but never quite decides on a favorite.
A Glimpse into My DIASOM Life
I have two children and manage three part-time jobs that collectively don’t amount to full-time employment. I teach writing classes online and on weekends, a passion harking back to my first career as a teacher. I want to keep that door open for a potential return to the classroom someday. Additionally, I lead yoga classes because it’s an activity I love, having completed my teacher training back in 2008. To stay connected and relevant, I also work part-time in communications, which helps with the bills, albeit only slightly. In the rare moments between jobs, I attempt to write, seeking to carve out my voice amidst the chaos.
Most of my time is spent at home, volunteering at my children’s school, tidying up, and preparing meals (or reheating leftovers). Picture me typing emails with children clinging to my legs, often in comfy yoga pants and a messy ponytail.
The Perks and Challenges of Being a DIASOM
Being a DIASOM has its perks. I’m never bored, and I bring a wealth of knowledge to discussions at dinner parties, thanks to my diverse experiences. However, I often find myself questioning whether I’m truly making a significant impact. Am I spreading myself too thin?
My thoughts frequently swirl around these dilemmas:
- Should I return to teaching and apply my life lessons as a parent to inspire the next generation?
- Would embracing my spiritual side through yoga and writing fulfill my aspirations?
- Is it time to focus on that novel I’ve always dreamed of writing?
- Should I invest my energy in advancing my current career?
- Am I prioritizing a clean home and meaningful family dinners enough? If I chose this path, I’d probably have to banish my devices from around my kids!
As a DIASOM, I check many boxes but find myself in a constant state of indecision, uncertain if I’m missing out on a major breakthrough by not diving deep into one area. Like the working moms who feel torn between responsibilities or the SAHMs who defend their choices, we DIASOMs face our own set of challenges.
Perhaps one day, I’ll leap into one of my passions and see where it leads. For now, I’ll keep balancing these various roles and hope nothing crumbles under the weight of my commitments.
