In a year that has felt like a continuous struggle, the internet has found a small source of joy: a charming little owl that has captured the hearts of many. In 2020, amid the chaos, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, despite its rather sparse appearance, brought a delightful surprise in the form of a little owl that made its temporary home inside the tree during its journey to New York City. Most importantly, he is safe and sound.

The Ravensbeard Wildlife Center shared on social media that the tiny creature was discovered after the 75-foot Norway spruce was chopped down in Oneonta, located about 80 miles from Albany and approximately 170 miles from its final destination in the city. The little feathered friend is a Saw-whet owl, the smallest species of owl found in the northeast. Just take a look at that adorable face!

In a Facebook update, the wildlife center recounted, “Yesterday morning, I received a call from someone inquiring if we rehabilitate owls. I confirmed that we do, and after a brief pause, she mentioned, ‘I’ll call back when my husband arrives home, he has the baby owl in a box ready for the long trip.’”

Given the owl’s exhausting journey without food or water, the wildlife center stepped in to help. They reported, “At Ravensbeard Wildlife Center, we’ve provided him with fluids and are feeding him as many mice as he can eat. He seems to be in good spirits and is relatively healthy considering everything. After a check-up with the vet, we’ll prepare him for release back into the wild.”

Naturally, this little guy has become an internet sensation, and who could resist such charm? If the somewhat sad-looking Rockefeller tree is suitable for an owl to take refuge in, it’s more than good enough for everyone else!

And yes, he has a name: meet Rockefeller! Ravensbeard later informed us that after a vet visit, he received a clean bill of health—no broken bones! They plan to release him soon. The wildlife center expressed gratitude to all those who helped spot and rescue the little owl: “Our hearts go out to all those who worked behind the scenes. Excellent job and thanks for saving ‘Rockefeller!’”
