A man has finally been apprehended in New York City for attacking well-known actor Sam Jenkins last October. The incident occurred when the suspect unexpectedly punched Jenkins, known for his role in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, causing him to fall to the ground.
The assailant, identified as Marcus Turner, was found by transit officers over the weekend in the subway near 72nd Street and Broadway, just a short distance from where the assault took place on October 1 at approximately 7:30 a.m., near Central Park. The NYPD announced the arrest, crediting a vigilant sergeant from @NYPDTransit for recognizing the suspect and ensuring his capture.
Surveillance footage captured the attack, showing a man in an “I Love NY” sweatshirt delivering a punch to the 67-year-old actor, who later sought medical attention for pain in his back, neck, and hip. Jenkins has had a remarkable career, starring in classics such as Parenthood, Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, and Little Shop of Horrors. Following the tragic loss of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, to breast cancer in 1991, he took a long hiatus from acting to care for their two children, Rachel and Mitchell.
“I stepped away from filmmaking around ’96 or ’97,” Jenkins shared in a 2005 interview. “As a single parent, juggling my kids and the demands of the film industry became too challenging, so I decided to focus on them. That short break ended up lasting longer than I expected, and I realized I didn’t miss it much.”
Fans of Jenkins are understandably relieved that his attacker has been arrested and will face justice. Initially, police did not disclose the actor’s identity following the assault, but his representative later confirmed that Jenkins had indeed been attacked. The assault was classified by police as a “random, unprovoked attack.”
Turner, who has a history of arrests, including another random assault two weeks after attacking Jenkins, has been charged with second-degree assault. He will appear in Manhattan Criminal Court today. Fortunately, Jenkins emerged from the incident without severe injuries, and it is a relief that the perpetrator is being held accountable.
