10 Things This Suburban Woman Doesn’t Want From Donald Trump

Dear Mr. President,

As a suburban woman, I’m part of the very demographic you’re eager to win over—pleading for my support and my vote. But I can’t and I won’t. Here are ten reasons why:

  1. I don’t need you to safeguard my neighborhood. I’m more concerned about the overt racists you’ve emboldened in my community than any so-called “urban” threat from outside.
  2. I don’t need you to defend our country’s heritage. I’m far more worried about a nation that won’t confront its past than about preserving a legacy that never should have been celebrated.
  3. I don’t need you to “get my husband back to work.” This isn’t the 1950s, and I’m not some retro housewife. What I need is effective management of the pandemic to restore jobs for everyone, especially women, who have been hit hardest by job losses due to COVID.
  4. I don’t need you to unilaterally decide to reopen schools. I need a national COVID mitigation and testing strategy to ensure schools can reopen safely and stay open.
  5. I don’t need you to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court simply for the sake of her gender. I want a justice who will uphold my reproductive rights and embrace a judicial philosophy that fosters progress, equality, and modernity.
  6. I don’t need you to promise me mythical healthcare plans that will magically protect pre-existing conditions. I need you to stop dismantling the protections that already exist.
  7. I don’t need you to speak as eloquently as past leaders. I need you to stop your misogynistic remarks toward women who challenge you and model behavior that I want my son and daughter to respect.
  8. I don’t need you to pretend to be a scientist or medical expert. I just need you to listen to their guidance and lead effectively.
  9. I don’t need you to sugarcoat the truth to spare me from “panic.” I need honesty, even in tough times.
  10. Lastly, I don’t need you to point fingers at others for your failures—be it Obama, Hillary, the deep state, or China. As women, we’ve learned that complaining is unproductive. It’s time to set grievances aside and tackle the hard work of governance.

But you won’t, and that’s why, no matter how much you plead, you won’t earn my vote. So that’s one thing you can’t take from me.

Sincerely,
A Suburban Woman Declining Your Offer
