Dear Students,
If I had realized that Friday in March was the last time I would see you in person, I would have cherished those final 46 minutes in an entirely different way. Instead of hastily gathering books and providing instructions for what I thought would be just a week or two of remote learning, I would have shared this with you.
You are about to embark on a significant journey into high school during a global pandemic that even the wisest adults struggle to comprehend. That Friday, you left school excited for a much-needed break from your busy routines. What you didn’t anticipate was the sudden vanishing of your familiar world, akin to a magic trick where the tablecloth is pulled away, leaving only the dishes behind. Your core belongings remained—your family, your home, your trusty school-issued iPad—but the comfort of your everyday life was abruptly lifted.
You won’t be able to graduate like those before you, adorned in caps and gowns, sharing handshakes and celebrations. You can’t explore your new high school, participate in spring sports, or enjoy vibrant gatherings with friends as you transition from eighth grade. You face uncertainty about where the world is heading.
Had I known that day would be our final face-to-face interaction, I would have spoken to you about your resilience and creativity. I would have expressed my belief that, despite these challenging times, your insights, compassion, and humor will contribute to the solutions our world desperately needs. You possess the strength to navigate this new reality and shape a better future.
If I had known, I would have held onto the handouts and notebooks you didn’t need. I would have encouraged you to embrace your childhood and enjoy every last moment of your old life before stepping into the unknown.

In summary, I wish I had known it would be our last day together so that I could have fully expressed my admiration for you. Your journey is just beginning, and I believe you will rise to the occasion.
