Navigating Tough Times Together: We’ve Got This

As we continue to navigate the complexities of life during these challenging times, we find ourselves in a whirlwind of parenting, working, and simply surviving.

Throughout the various phases of lockdown—from #schooliscanceled to #shelterinplace to #wearmasks—we have learned to adapt and reframe our daily lives. Our wardrobes may consist of clothes pulled straight from the laundry basket, and we might find ourselves shedding tears in the shower or having our own mini-meltdowns on the floor. Our meals often consist of frozen foods, and the dishwasher seems to be in a perpetual state of running. We might be consuming more TV shows than ever and getting lost in video games. The flood of news can feel overwhelming; our coffee consumption is likely through the roof, and we might indulge in that extra nightcap a bit too frequently. As the nights stretch on, we find ourselves starting the day again without enough rest.

Yet amidst these struggles, there are moments of joy. We gather as families, savoring laughter together. We experiment with baking bread and cooking comforting soups. We splash in puddles wearing rain boots, searching for rainbows just outside our back doors. Rediscovering unfinished art projects and long-forgotten toys has become a fun adventure. We stay connected through virtual classes, happy hours, family dinners, drive-by birthday celebrations, and game nights with friends. Our group chats are filled with homeschooling tips, humorous memes, and photos of our children, reinforcing our support for one another. We cuddle on the couch, embracing a slower, more deliberate pace of life.

While we all cope with these circumstances differently, finding a balance between positive and negative methods can be a challenge. Some days are filled with play followed by work, while others flip that routine. Schooling is interspersed throughout our days, and while we might argue and reconcile, we face the chaos of kids wrestling on the couch or interrupting our Zoom calls. We juggle work and parenting, often feeling guilty for not meeting our own expectations. The pressure to excel as parents, employees, and partners can feel overwhelming, especially when our to-do lists seem more daunting than ever.

Time seems both infinite and fleeting; we’re caught in an endless cycle. We hope for better days ahead, while also bracing for whatever challenges might come. It’s essential to take a moment—inhale, exhale—and try to confront these challenges head-on.

It’s crucial to acknowledge our privilege during these times. Many of us can work from home, and our children can attend school online. We can enjoy walks in our neighborhoods and have essentials delivered to our doorsteps. We express immense gratitude for the essential workers who risk their health to support others. We are mindful of those on the frontlines, battling the harsh realities of illness and isolation.

As we watch cities attempt to reopen, we do so with a mix of fear and hope, questioning whether it is truly safe or if we are rushing too quickly. Even though staying home presents its own struggles, we recognize the importance of doing so for the safety of our families and communities.
