Upon spotting Arbery running in their neighborhood, they armed themselves and jumped into their truck, claiming to the police that they suspected him of being involved in local break-ins. A third party recorded the horrifying incident, and the footage, which quickly spread across social media, sparked outrage.
The tragic reality is that it took nearly two and a half months for the McDonalds to be arrested and charged with murder. Public outcry finally led to their apprehension, highlighting the systemic issues within our justice system. Many have likened Arbery’s death to a modern-day lynching, as a Black man lost his life while the alleged perpetrators roamed free. His name has joined the ranks of others like Atatiana Jefferson and Trayvon Martin, reminding us of the ongoing threat faced by Black individuals simply living their lives.
Celebrities, politicians, and athletes, including LeBron James and Senator Kamala Harris, have called for justice for Arbery. The question remains: why did it take so long for the suspects to be held accountable? The existence of video evidence makes the delay even more baffling.
As I watched the video, tears streamed down my face. I couldn’t help but think of my own Black son and the stereotypes that surround young Black men. The unfortunate truth is that they often carry a target on their backs, facing undue suspicion and judgment. I remember the first time a white individual referred to my son, who was only two at the time, as a “thug.” This incident occurred shortly after the high-profile killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, and it marked a painful moment for me as a mother.
Last fall, while my son and I played at a local park, I witnessed a father rush over to prevent his child from playing with mine. The message was clear: my son’s presence made him uncomfortable. These moments of discomfort from white individuals are far too common as my children grow older. When they were younger, they were often seen as cute and charming. Now, as they mature, I find myself increasingly vigilant, concerned about the dangers they might encounter.
Their beauty as Black children is overshadowed by the fear their presence instills in some white individuals. This fear often leads to calls for police intervention or unwarranted surveillance, perpetuated by a societal bias that can be lethal. We are often left to navigate a world where the law and social norms seemingly favor those who would cause harm.
When discussing issues of race with white individuals, I frequently hear the same narrative: that Black people should modify their behavior to avoid danger. This victim-blaming ignores the harsh reality that no amount of respectability or education can shield a Black person from a determined aggressor. Such attitudes reflect a troubling trend of racism that must be confronted.
It is imperative for white individuals to recognize their privilege, a result of centuries of systemic oppression against Black people. This denial not only perpetuates injustice but also allows the cycle of violence to continue, as seen in Arbery’s tragic case.
So, what can we do? If you share my outrage and sadness, let’s channel those feelings into action. This Mother’s Day weekend, Arbery would have turned twenty-six, and his family’s lawyer has encouraged people to run or walk 2.23 miles in his honor.
But don’t stop there. Don’t let this be a fleeting moment of solidarity. Arbery’s death is a stark reminder of the dangers that loom over every Black individual daily, including my own children.
