As my children grow older, gift shopping becomes increasingly challenging. It’s a double-edged sword: either A. They have a vague idea of what they want, or B. They have a clear wish list that includes things I simply will not purchase.
Take today, for instance. My eldest son has just turned 10. After a whirlwind of activity leading up to his birthday, I finally managed to pull myself together and head out for his gifts. He recently hinted to his dad that he wants a phone as a birthday present.
Excuse me? Not on my watch.
I’m not suggesting that all 10-year-olds should be barred from having a phone. However, my child, at this age, does not require one. If I were working outside the home or if he spent significant time alone—say, at home or during practice—then perhaps I could see the need. Yet, that’s not our reality.
Considering his friends’ proximity, I might be more inclined if he frequently rode his bike to their houses, but that’s not how things stand either. Since I work from home, I am present whenever he is. When we go out, I’m usually right there with him. He already has access to various electronics, and right now, the only reason he wants a phone is as a status symbol. And let me clarify—if anyone in this household is going to have a status symbol, it will be either my husband or myself.
We don’t own flashy cars, a yacht, or a summer getaway in the south of France. I don’t flaunt expensive watches, designer clothes, or high-end handbags. And that’s perfectly fine. With the experience of life under my belt, I understand that material possessions don’t define our worth. It’s my responsibility to impart this wisdom to my children.
So, sorry kiddo, but you’ll have to wait another year before you can try to convince me otherwise. Happy Birthday!

In summary, my decision to postpone giving my child a cell phone stems from a belief in teaching values over materialism. I want him to understand that true worth isn’t found in gadgets or status symbols.
