Before stepping into the whirlwind of parenthood, I fancied myself a parenting guru. I had it all figured out—at least, that’s what I thought. But once I welcomed my little one into the world, I quickly realized how naive I truly was. The simple tasks I once tackled with ease, like changing diapers or bathing kids, now had me scouring online tutorials. My judgmental views on parenting, particularly about rules and discipline, crumbled faster than a cookie in a toddler’s hand.
1. Screen Time
Before Kids (BK): I was adamantly against screen time, convinced that my child would thrive on enriching activities—reading books, engaging in playdates, and exploring the great outdoors. No screens, just pure childhood bliss!
After Kids (AK): “Do you want cartoons or Netflix, sweetheart?” The irony hit hard. Not only did I find comfort in animated shows while nursing, but soon my little one was leaning back to catch glimpses of action-packed dramas. As a stay-at-home parent, I’ve embraced the occasional screen time, and I’m unapologetic about it. A little Sesame Street gives me a much-needed breather!
2. Fast Food
BK: No way my child will ever eat fast food! I planned on crafting organic meals that looked like masterpieces.
AK: Enter Chick-fil-A. The allure of those waffle fries is too strong to resist, especially when my little one is in tow. Who can say no to a tasty treat now and then?
3. Spanking
BK: Absolutely not! That’s barbaric.
AK: I still stand firm against physical punishment. But honestly, after a chaotic day filled with toddler tantrums and endless battles over broccoli, I’ve had my fair share of daydreams involving more extreme forms of discipline.
4. Public Tantrums
BK: Those parents clearly have no control over their children. If your kid is throwing a fit in public, you take charge or you leave!
AK: Now I see parenting in a different light. Small kids can be unpredictable—like tiny dinosaurs! If I remain calm and low-key, sometimes I can sneak in a few necessary errands before the inevitable meltdown.
5. Formula Feeding
BK: Breastfeeding is natural and effortless—no need for formula.
AK: Little did I know! Breastfeeding turned out to be a Herculean task. As I struggled, I realized how much I underestimated the power of a simple bottle. Sometimes, you just need a backup plan.
6. The Momiform
BK: I refuse to let myself go post-baby. I’ll always look put-together!
AK: Fast forward to days without a shower and a wardrobe of yoga pants. If you’re wondering how many spills it takes for a shirt to become a rag, well, I’ve lost count.
7. Intimacy After Baby
BK: Oh, I’ll keep the romance alive with cute nursing bras!
AK: Now, I just try to keep my baby on one side while I attempt to reclaim my personal space.
8. Food as a Reward
BK: No way will I use food as a bribe! I’ll rely on stickers and praise instead.
AK: “If you can make it through five minutes without an accident, I’ll give you dessert!” Desperate times call for desperate measures.
9. Co-Sleeping
BK: Not in our bed! I bought a crib for a reason.
AK: Let’s just say, I haven’t slept in my bed since the day my baby arrived. I’ve been camped out in a rocking chair, cradling my little one. If he’d just let me share a sliver of that bed, I’d be forever grateful.
Looking back, if I could meet my pre-parent self, I’d share a few insights about the reality of parenting. Perhaps I’d even suggest that she let that stressed mom with the crying baby cut in line at the grocery store. Parenting is a journey filled with unexpected challenges and triumphs.
