When I stumbled upon a heartwarming tale about a 6-year-old boy who misplaced his treasured stuffed tiger during a family trip, I couldn’t help but think of my own daughter, Lily, and her unwavering attachment to her cherished security blanket, whom she affectionately named Snuggle Bear. This isn’t your typical teddy bear or blanket; Snuggle Bear is an old, off-white square of fabric with a stuffed bear head stitched to one corner, a beloved “lovey” that has been Lily’s nightly companion since day one.
Now approaching the age of 8, Lily still clings to her Snuggle Bear, though I often find myself feeling a bit exasperated with it. It has an uncanny knack for vanishing just when we need it most. Countless times, panic has ensued in our household just before bedtime, as Lily, red-faced and teary-eyed, searches for her beloved bear.
“Is it under the couch?” I bark like a drill sergeant, rallying the family to join in the frantic search. “Could it be hiding in the attic? Did it end up on a random bookshelf during a previous hunt? What about behind the TV or wedged between the mattress and bedframe?” And the cereal cupboard—has anyone checked there?
The question always looms: where could Snuggle Bear possibly be? Whenever new babysitters arrive, I make it crystal clear that this worn piece of fabric must be treated with the utmost care, as if it were a key witness in a high-profile trial. Losing it is simply not an option!
As Lily has matured, she remains fond of her Snuggle Bear, although she’s becoming increasingly aware of how “childish” it seems to her peers. Reluctantly, she’s agreed to leave her lovey on her pillow in her bedroom, which has significantly reduced our nightly search frenzy since we can now limit our hunt to her room. But, of course, Snuggle Bear is a rule-breaker; we often find her lounging on the window seat or sprawled out on the floor.
Right before we imposed these new “house rules,” Snuggle Bear managed one last dramatic escape. Much like young Owen Lake in Tampa, Florida—who left behind his favorite toy at an airport—our mishap occurred during a family trip.
We were living in Los Angeles at the time and decided to drive up to San Francisco for a spring break getaway. To treat ourselves, we booked a stay at the luxurious Fairmont Hotel, perched atop the historic Nob Hill.
On our first morning there, we awoke ready to explore the vibrant city. As typical hotel guests, we left our beds unmade, and Snuggle Bear, who Lily insisted accompany us, was somewhere among the rumpled sheets or perhaps lost in the bathroom’s wet towels. Upon returning to our room that afternoon, we discovered a pristine space—Snuggle Bear was nowhere to be found.
We searched high and low, and panic set in. Lily began to hyperventilate, tears streaming. I rushed to contact the concierge, who advised me to get in touch with the laundry team. When I did, I was met with grim news: “We send out thousands of pounds of linens each week. If Snuggle Bear was swept up with the sheets or towels, the chances of locating such a small item are unfortunately quite slim.”
Poor Lily was inconsolable. To her credit, she tried to enjoy our vacation, taking in the boat ride around Alcatraz, watching sea lions at Pier 39, and snapping selfies at the Golden Gate Bridge. But each night, she silently mourned her lost companion, while we packed up the minivan to head home, Snuggle Bear-less.
Upon our return, sadness permeated the air until a week later, the phone rang. “Fantastic news!” the concierge exclaimed, sharing the relief I felt. “The staff felt awful and really went above and beyond to find Snuggle Bear. She was indeed mixed in with the laundry!”
I was amazed at the lengths they went to for a little blanket, especially knowing how often I misplace socks in my own laundry. “Please let Lily know that Snuggle Bear is going on an adventure today,” the concierge added. “We’re sending her via FedEx, and she’ll be back home tomorrow!”
When Lily heard the news, her joy was palpable—like a holiday miracle times ten! When the box arrived the next day, we tore it open to reveal Snuggle Bear, and Lily broke down in tears at their reunion, squeezing her friend tightly as if she’d never let go.
But just hours later, as bedtime approached, I heard Lily’s familiar voice echoing down the hallway: “Snuggle? Snuggle? Oh no! Where did that Snuggle Bear go?”
