Why I’m Deeply Thankful for My Kids’ Uncle and Godfather

Long before I envisioned a life filled with marriage and parenting, my world revolved around two important men: my brother and my dearest friend, Ethan. However, my relationship with them didn’t always start off smoothly.

When my mother announced she was expecting, I was far from excited about becoming an older sister. In fact, I spent the first ten years of my brother’s life making things a bit difficult for him. On the other hand, my friendship with Ethan began on a competitive note, filled with teasing and rivalry in our shared classes.

As time passed, I discovered that my brother could be a fun partner in mischief, while Ethan and I recognized our different strengths—he excelled in math and science, while I had my own areas of expertise. This shift in perspective led Ethan to help me with my studies rather than poke fun at me, and our relationships blossomed from there.

Naturally, I anticipated that both would form unique bonds with my children. But nothing could have prepared me for the incredible influence they would have as their uncle and godfather. I’ve come to understand that one doesn’t need to be a biological parent to have a significant impact on a child’s life.

In a world where negative stereotypes about Black men, particularly around fatherhood, are pervasive, their presence defies convention. They challenge both gender and racial norms, and my admiration for them knows no bounds.

Ethan, my best friend, is probably the most emotionally insightful person I know. He is a source of comfort, wisdom, and unwavering support—qualities I’ve seen him pass down to my kids in remarkable ways. His emotional openness will teach my son that he is free to define his own version of Black manhood. For my daughter, Ethan serves as a guide, helping her navigate the complexities of human behavior and communication.

He doesn’t need to be perfect, and he isn’t. What draws me to him is his authenticity and the way he shows up in every situation. This raw presence has a profound impact on my children, offering them valuable lessons just by being around him.

My brother, on the other hand, provides a different model of Black masculinity. Like my husband, he has a passion for anime, which once drew ridicule but now serves as a testament to his unique perspective. He brings a vibrant energy and a wealth of knowledge that can inspire my kids in extraordinary ways. His slightly younger age compared to my husband and me makes him relatable; my children see him as “cool,” but they will also come to appreciate his unconditional love and support.

Every visit from my brother is refreshing. He effortlessly lightens the mood, reminding me not to take life too seriously. He instinctively knows when to help out with the kids, all while maintaining that precious bond we share.

Likewise, Ethan’s presence in our home is a blessing. He never forgets to bring thoughtful gifts—often educational ones—and makes it a point to visit whenever he’s back in town. His commitment to fostering my children’s growth is evident, and I appreciate how both he and my brother have carved out their own special relationships with my kids, complementing their bond with their father.

While I am immensely thankful for my husband’s active role as a father, it’s important to recognize that my children’s uncle and godfather are there of their own volition. They choose to devote their time and energy to enrich my kids’ lives, which is a gift beyond measure.

I can’t express enough how grateful I am for their selfless involvement. I look forward to witnessing how their presence continues to shape my children positively. The ability for two beloved figures from my own past to play such a significant role in my children’s futures is truly heartwarming.
