As I hit my mid-40s, I’ve come to realize that the definition of “cool” is definitely subjective. Today, while sorting through my kitchen drawers (just wait, I promise it gets better), I found myself humming along to a catchy alt-rock tune that’s been stuck in my head for days. I know all the lyrics. Yes, I’m that cool. In fact, I’d argue that I’m significantly cooler now than I was ten years ago. Here’s my case:
1. I’m an Expert on Panic! At the Disco.
Ten years ago, my music library was dominated by children’s tunes, and I was all about The Laurie Berkner Band. While I still have a soft spot for “Victor Vito” (and Freddie Vasco, clap clap), having teenagers means I can finally enjoy music that isn’t about dinosaurs or trains.
2. I’ve Mastered the Art of Not Overdressing.
In my 30s, I often found myself confused about what was age-appropriate fashion. Thanks to my teenage daughters, I now know exactly what looks great and what’s a complete disaster. I can’t imagine how women without teenage daughters manage to leave the house without a fashion faux pas.
3. Dangly Earrings Are My New Best Friends.
Growing up in the ’80s, my love for bold earrings never faded. However, when my kids were little, I had to put them away to avoid any toddler-related disasters. Now, I can wear them freely, as long as I avoid anything that screams “Jody Watley.” My daughters keep me in check when it comes to style!
4. I’m Binge-Watching Like a Pro.
I’ve traded in cartoons for quality television. I’m now a fan of shows like The Big Bang Theory and Netflix marathons of Mad Men. I even attempted Game of Thrones once, but with kids under 15, I’ll have to pass on that for now. I can confidently say I’ve left Dora the Explorer behind!
5. My Bras Are Flap-Free.
Gone are the days of nursing bras with flaps. Now, I can wear whatever I want without worrying about any spills!
6. No More Spit-Up Stains.
You heard that right! My clothes are now free from the remnants of baby days. Pure bliss.
7. I’m Diving Into Bestsellers.
With all the time I spend waiting in the car for school pickups or practices, I’ve become a reading machine, devouring bestsellers—those without pictures, of course.
8. Fashion Trends Have Cycled Back.
High-waisted pants? Check. Leggings? Done. Off-the-shoulder styles? Bring it on! It’s nice to see my favorite styles making a comeback.
Reflecting on all this, I realize I was also cooler in my 30s than I was in my 20s. And despite my epic tan and big hair in my teenage years, I was merely practicing for my current coolness. Like a fine wine, I’m just getting better with age. I can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store!
