In a heartwarming display of support, members of a Texas church participated in the Austin Pride parade, offering complimentary “parent hugs” to anyone in the LGBTQ community who might be seeking comfort. A warm embrace can mean the world, especially for individuals who may not have a nurturing relationship with their own families.
Blogger and community advocate, Lily Thompson, took to social media to share touching moments from the parade, where her “cherished little church” was present, arms wide open. They provided “Free Parent Hugs, Free Guardian Hugs, and Free Mentor Hugs” as if it were their calling. Inspired by the work of community leader Mia Rodriguez from Free Parent Hugs, Thompson and her church members aimed to spread love and acceptance through heartfelt embraces. “And I mean the kind of hugs only a parent can give,” she expressed.
“Our arms were constantly full,” she recalled. “We embraced countless individuals, but time and again, I noticed someone in the parade glance our way, scrutinize our signs, and then rush into our open arms.” Many attendees shared their need for that comforting hug. “These were the souls who said: ‘I miss this,’ ‘My family doesn’t accept me,’ ‘I haven’t spoken to my dad in years,’ ‘Can I have one more hug?’” Thompson shared, her heart heavy with empathy. As someone who has faced rejection from her own family, she understands the deep yearning for that unconditional warmth and reassurance — a good parent hug can truly make everything feel alright.
Thompson emphasized that every person they hugged was reminded that they were “incredibly loved, valued, and cherished.” Such a simple yet profound gesture of kindness can truly uplift someone’s day. Unfortunately, many in the LGBTQ community struggle with strained familial relationships, making these acts of acceptance and love all the more significant.
“And we hugged until we could hardly lift our arms anymore. This is why we are here,” she continued. “The last image captures the essence of Pride — a blend of glitter, sweat, and a few joyful tears.”
