Though I was too young to catch it during its original release, I was pleasantly surprised to discover just how gripping a film about sharks could be when I finally watched Jaws as an adult. From its thrilling plot to the menacing presence of the shark, it’s a classic that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Now, to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the film is returning to theaters for a limited time starting June 21.
Watching movies at home has its perks—especially when you can enjoy popcorn made in your own kitchen—but some films, like Jaws, truly deserve the cinematic experience. There are countless other remarkable movies that would benefit from a big-screen revival, some for my enjoyment and others for my kids. While I’ll skip the obvious timeless classics like Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, here are ten films from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s that I’d love to see back on the big screen.
-
The Godfather (Parts I and II)
Let’s overlook Part III for obvious reasons. These masterpieces have set the standard for mafia films and won Oscars for Best Picture. With stunning settings in 1940s New York City, the Italian countryside, and revolutionary Cuba, this epic family saga explores how a well-meaning young man can get swept up in his family’s criminal empire. These films are packed with unforgettable moments that deserve the immersive experience of a dark theater—perhaps even a double feature. -
Grease
Songs like “Greased Lightning” and “You’re the One That I Want” deserve to be belted out in a theater. While I have my reservations about the story’s moral—Sandy changing herself to win Danny’s love—the film is a communal experience that’s best enjoyed with friends, where everyone can tap their feet and sing along. -
The Princess Bride
Renowned for its witty dialogue, this film also offers breathtaking visuals. With iconic scenes featuring sword fights and the memorable Rodents of Unusual Size, it’s a delightful adventure that deserves a grand display. -
Gremlins
Confession: I’ve never seen this film. I know! I caught the sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but I’m holding out for a revival of the original. Is it too spooky for the kids? Hopefully, someone can advise me before we go. -
Planet of the Apes (the original)
Remakes don’t hold a candle to the power of the original. Despite its dated effects, the ending still left me gasping as a child. The original film’s makeup and storytelling are so compelling that I’d love to share this experience with my son. -
The Shining
Not a fan of horror? Neither am I, but this film is a visual masterpiece. Jack Nicholson’s chilling performance and the iconic scenes, like blood pouring from the elevator, are best appreciated on the big screen—definitely a no-kids situation. -
Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
This is one movie you can enjoy with the kids! The vibrant colors, the adventurous bike ride, and the unforgettable breakfast scene are perfect for a family outing to the theater. -
Big
Another family-friendly flick worth revisiting. The iconic piano scene at FAO Schwarz would surely be more magical on a movie screen. It’s a charming film that deserves to be seen in a distraction-free environment. -
Do The Right Thing
The film’s ending sparks debates, but its visual storytelling is equally memorable. The sweltering heat of summer adds intensity to the narrative, making it a movie that needs the full theater experience to truly grasp its depth. -
Back to the Future
Were you waiting for this classic? The question is, do you want to introduce it to your kids or relive it yourself?
