In a deeply moving video, a mother from Guatemala is seen pleading for the return of her son, whom she hasn’t seen in nearly two months. “This is incredibly difficult. It hurts too much… Every mother can relate,” says Maria, expressing her anguish after being separated from her eight-year-old son. They are currently held in different facilities across the United States.

Maria and her husband fled the violence in Guatemala, seeking safety and asylum in the U.S. However, upon arrival in Texas, she was separated from her son and husband. Her husband has since been deported, leaving Maria desperate to reunite with her child. After some effort, she was able to locate her son, who is now in a facility in Arizona, but their communication has been limited.

“I want to be with you, Mom,” her son tells her, adding, “I don’t want to be here anymore.” As reports of families being reunited begin to surface, the devastating impact of the separation becomes painfully clear. Children are returning with visible signs of neglect, including weight loss, bruises, and other ailments. More profoundly, the emotional scars of being torn from their parents at such a young age are immeasurable.

The ongoing fallout from the previous administration’s zero tolerance immigration policy has left many families fractured. Caseworkers face significant challenges in reuniting children with their parents, many of whom have already been deported. While a recent executive order aimed to halt family separations moving forward, it does little to address the plight of those already affected. A Health and Human Services official revealed that children who have been separated will not be immediately reunited with their parents while the adults remain in custody.

Maria shares that although she is able to communicate with her son, the shelter’s assurances that he is fine do not alleviate her concerns. “As a mother, you can tell when your child is not okay,” she states. Despite complying with all requirements from social workers, including documentation and fingerprinting, she is met with the frustrating response that she must continue to wait.

“Please, I beg you, help me. I just want my child back,” Maria pleads. “There’s nothing more painful than being apart from your child.”
