When Melissa Carter sent her 14-year-old son, Kevin, to visit relatives for spring break, she never considered inquiring about unsecured firearms in their home. “I made sure he packed his essentials, like his toothbrush,” Melissa reflects. “I checked that adults would be present, but that detail never crossed my mind.”

Maintaining contact with Kevin during his stay, Melissa felt reassured by her communication with him. However, on April 7, 2016, she received a devastating call that would change her life forever—her son had been shot, and she needed to hurry to the hospital. “I was in utter disbelief,” she recalls, still haunted by that moment.

After a grueling four-hour drive, Melissa and her husband arrived at the hospital, only to learn the heartbreaking news that Kevin had not survived. In her grief, she remembers the chaos of emotions, her heart breaking into countless pieces.

As she began to piece together the events of that tragic day, Melissa was struck by the preventability of Kevin’s death. Investigators informed her that there was no outside assailant; rather, Kevin had been alone in the house with another boy his age, whose guardians had left just minutes before. The other boy had a firearm, which he believed was unloaded, and in a tragic accident, shot Kevin in the chest.

The subsequent months were filled with pain and trauma. Melissa found solace in grief counseling and connected with other parents who had lost children to gun violence. Yet, every time she turned on the news, she saw similar stories unfolding: more families shattered by gun deaths.

Melissa had always felt a deep sorrow for the alarming rate of gun-related deaths in America, but it wasn’t until she faced this unimaginable loss that she felt compelled to act. “As someone who didn’t own a gun, I never imagined this could happen to us,” she states. “I realized I couldn’t stay silent; I needed to join a movement for change.”

Shortly thereafter, Melissa became involved with Moms Demand Action and is now a fellow with the Everytown Survivor Network. She focuses on promoting the BE SMART program, which provides practical guidelines for parents to prevent gun violence among children.

BE SMART Program

BE SMART is an acronym that emphasizes critical safety measures:

  • S = Secure firearms in homes and vehicles.
  • M = Model responsible behavior.
  • A = Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
  • R = Recognize the risks of teen suicide.
  • T = Tell your peers to be SMART.

Melissa emphasizes the importance of asking about unsecured firearms whenever your child visits someone else’s home. “Don’t just ask about their residence; inquire about any unfamiliar places your child might go, including cars,” she advises. It’s crucial to never assume that someone you know well will have secured firearms.

“It could happen to anyone, anywhere,” Melissa states. “Gun safety is essential, and it begins with responsible parenting.” She underscores that the onus falls on adults, not children, stressing that children are naturally curious and impulsive. “Hiding loaded guns is not enough; children will find them,” she warns.

With summer approaching, Melissa urges parents to be particularly vigilant, as children will likely be spending more time away from home, just as Kevin did when he was tragically killed.

Melissa’s resilience in sharing her heart-wrenching story is nothing short of inspiring. “Every day, 96 Americans die from gun violence, impacting countless lives,” she notes. “It’s unacceptable for children to live in fear of gun violence.”

This June 1st marks Wear Orange Day, dedicated to raising awareness about gun violence and honoring those lost. Melissa encourages everyone to participate in memory of her son and all those who have been senselessly taken by gun violence.
