What Every Parent Desires This Summer

As the calendar flips to June, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement, much like a child counting down the days to summer break. The vision of sun-soaked afternoons, spontaneous adventures, and carefree moments dances in my mind. However, as any seasoned parent knows, dreams and reality often diverge. Yet, can’t we hold onto those dreams just a bit longer? Sure, our days will feature plenty of the familiar refrain of “I’m bored!” but there will also be unforgettable experiences sprinkled in. Parenting often feels like a blend of 75% routine and 25% pure joy. Fortunately, those magical moments have a way of overshadowing most of the mundane tasks.

So here’s my wish list for this summer, with a sprinkle of realism:

I want to awaken slowly, free from the frantic rush of school mornings, savoring my tea (even if it means letting the kids indulge in a few extra episodes of their favorite show). I crave mornings filled with sprinklers, sidewalk chalk masterpieces, spontaneous dance parties, crafting obstacle courses, flipping pancakes together, loosening up nap schedules, and indulging in ice cream for breakfast on a whim (even if my toddler insists that ice cream is a morning staple for the next three months).

I long for afternoons bursting with bike rides, water gun battles, and impromptu pool trips (even when sunscreen stings my toddler’s eyes, resulting in an hour of cries, and packing for a simple outing feels like preparing for a week-long vacation).

Evenings should be filled with fireflies, breathtaking sunsets, racing to the ice cream truck, dining al fresco, and leisurely walks to the dock (even if mosquitoes have a field day with us, the kids stay up too late and become cranky, or our dinner is shared with a few uninvited guests).

I want nights where they sleep soundly after exhausting summer days, their hair infused with the scents of chlorine and sunscreen. I want to linger by their beds, soaking in the moment, fully aware that this is the only summer they will be precisely two and eight years old, with their unique quirks and interests (even if I’m so exhausted that I can’t keep my eyes open long enough to tackle the stack of books I promised myself I’d read).

I know that as the weeks stretch on, I’ll find myself craving a bit more structure, relief from the heat, and a touch less chaos. The thought of backpacks, fresh notebooks, and the beauty of fall foliage will start to creep into my mind.

But for now, all I want is to grab a prime spot by the pool, kick back, and sip on something cold and sweet (even if a messy, snotty child leaps into my lap, spills my drink, and uses me as a makeshift towel).
