In recent weeks, I’ve found myself in a few challenging situations where I wasn’t quite sure how to respond appropriately. One incident involved my child being accidentally struck in the head with a rock by a friend’s child. Should I intervene? I understood it was an accident, and the child felt remorse, but I was conflicted. Ultimately, I chose not to say anything.
In another instance, I learned that the teenager of an acquaintance—someone I see fairly regularly—has been participating in activities that are concerning and illegal. If this were my child, I’d be devastated. So again, the question loomed: Should I say something or remain uninvolved?
If I were in either scenario, I would want to be informed. I believe many parents find themselves grappling with similar dilemmas—uncertain about whether to speak up. Let me make it clear: If my child throws a rock and hits yours, please let me know. It doesn’t matter if it was unintentional.
If my child speaks to you in a disrespectful manner, I need to know. If they’re involved in drug use, I want to be informed. If you suspect my child is in a location without permission, please tell me. If you’ve heard rumors about my child engaging in risky behavior, even if unverified, I want to hear it. Whether it’s about bullying or just general misbehavior, I want to be in the loop.
If you discover my child is involved in sexual activities or using inappropriate language around others, please inform me. And on a personal note, if you ever see me with a visible booger or if my mascara is running, I would appreciate your honesty. If my child is associating with individuals that raise red flags—like substance abusers or those with criminal records—let me know. If they’re doing things online that you wouldn’t want your child to do, I need to hear it.
If there’s anything that doesn’t fit neatly into this list but you’re unsure whether to share, please do. If you’re uncertain about how to approach me, just say: “Remember when you mentioned that you wanted to be told if your kid was acting out? Well…”
