Please Respect My Boundaries

I have a strong aversion to physical contact. Just ask my partner.

During family gatherings, I tend to avoid hugs, and greetings that involve kissing make me uneasy. It feels strange to me when individuals I barely know touch me. The only exceptions are my partner and my children, who understand that sometimes I just need personal space and a break from being needed.

So, when I’m at work and a colleague, who is not my partner, casually pats my back or throws an arm around my shoulders, it sends me into a panic.

You might not notice it from the outside. I maintain a facade of calmness, laughing at your mediocre jokes and deflecting your clumsy attempts at flirtation. I try my best to ignore the inappropriate undertones in your casual anecdotes and fight the impulse to confront you for your presumptuous behavior. It’s astonishing to me that anyone could feel entitled to invade my personal space without consent.

Women like me often feel compelled to endure these awkward moments. We have families to care for and can’t afford the luxury of directly confronting you. You may not recognize the discomfort your actions create or how unsettling it can be for a woman to be touched without her permission, even if it seems harmless.

I also acknowledge my part in this dynamic. I struggle to voice my discomfort, but it’s time for a change. From now on, I kindly ask you to refrain from touching me.

I don’t appreciate physical contact, and it’s essential that people respect my boundaries.
