In the aftermath of Barack Obama’s historic election as the first Black president of the United States, I never imagined I’d find myself writing about the alarming rise of white supremacists seeking political office nearly a decade later. In retrospect, perhaps I should have anticipated the backlash. However, my idealistic optimism clouded my judgment.
The backlash against racial progress in America is as entrenched as the nation itself. The Ku Klux Klan emerged following the end of slavery, and the mass incarceration of Black men escalated after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The established order of white supremacy does not tolerate challenges to its authority.
Fast forward to 2018, and we are confronted with the unsettling reality of open white supremacists campaigning for public office. These aren’t merely individuals with implicit biases; they are avowed racists espousing beliefs such as “white race > all other races” and denying historical atrocities like the Holocaust.
While I typically limit my political commentary to specific policies and issues, some matters transcend party lines. The candidacy of a blatant white supremacist should be a definitive deal breaker for any voter. Every American who opposes a government led by individuals in white hoods must recognize the threat posed by such candidates and take action to stop it.
For those who might dismiss this as improbable, consider the case of David Duke, who won a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1989. Complacency is not an option. Stay vigilant, everyone. STAY VIGILANT.
Current White Supremacist Candidates Running for Office
-
Mark Turner, Candidate for the Montana State House of Representatives
Don’t be fooled into thinking we’re just targeting one political party. Turner is running for a seat in Montana’s State House as a Democrat—though he has previously campaigned as a Republican. His website suggests he aims to “unite Right Wing Democrats and Right Wing Republicans,” which is baffling. Turner has also attempted to recruit people of color and LGBTQ individuals to the KKK. He claims on his site that his past affiliations were a fabrication, yet he apologizes for the harm caused. His platform includes bizarre claims about European Americans needing legal protection against discrimination. It’s an unsettling mix of delusion and bigotry. -
Jacob Wright, Congressional Candidate in Pennsylvania
Wright expresses paranoia about white Americans becoming a minority and alleges that groups like Black Lives Matter are plotting an armed insurrection. In 2015, he unsuccessfully ran for mayor under the white nationalist American Freedom Party. Given his recent conviction for making terrorist threats, he should be nowhere near a position of power. -
Samuel Reed, Congressional Candidate in Illinois
Reed is a self-described neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier. He has made highly controversial statements, such as calling the Holocaust an “international extortion racket.” Shockingly, he is running unopposed in the Republican primary for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, which encompasses parts of Chicago. Despite his previous failures in elections, he will likely appear on the ballot this fall. -
Paul Harris, Candidate for Congress in Wisconsin
Harris has received praise from notorious white supremacist David Duke, a clear indicator of his racist tendencies. He is vying to replace House Speaker Paul Ryan, and when asked about his nationalist views, he has deflected questions instead of outright denying them. His appearance on Duke’s podcast raises significant red flags about his beliefs.
Additionally, there are candidates like Joe Parker from Arizona, Robert White from Pennsylvania, and Michael Green from Florida, all of whom maintain close ties with white supremacist groups or ideologies, and have either remained silent on their affiliations or actively supported them.
It’s imperative to reject candidates who openly espouse white supremacist views. Educate your friends and family about the implications of voting for individuals who may align with their views on certain issues but harbor such hateful ideologies. It’s crucial to denounce these candidates whenever possible; we cannot afford to regress after the progress we’ve made.

In summary, it is crucial to remain vigilant and proactive in the face of rising hate and bigotry in politics. We must challenge these candidates and ensure that our political landscape remains representative of all citizens, not just those who promote division.
