In an inspiring move, a young activist from Flint, Michigan, is on a mission to ensure that local children can enjoy a free screening of the highly anticipated film A Wrinkle In Time. Known for her previous efforts, the ten-year-old, who goes by the name of Bella Flint, has already made headlines for her impressive fundraising skills.
At just eight years old, Bella managed to reach out to then-President Barack Obama, successfully persuading him to visit Flint to witness the ongoing water crisis. Following this, she raised an impressive $10,000 to supply backpacks filled with essential school supplies for her peers. Now, she has set her sights on a new challenge, raising funds for her community to experience the cinematic magic of A Wrinkle In Time.
Bella has launched a fundraising campaign with a $10,000 target, and in just five days, she has already accumulated over $6,500. She expressed her motivation, stating, “It’s not often that a black girl is featured as the lead in a film, especially one tasked with saving the world. I want young girls to see themselves in this story and recognize that they too can ‘save the world.’” Furthermore, Bella emphasized the importance of representation in media for young girls, particularly on the silver screen.
In addition to the movie screenings, Bella aims to provide each child with a copy of the A Wrinkle In Time book, because she believes that literature can transport us to new worlds and inspire us to pursue our dreams. Her mother, Jenna Carter, shared that Bella initially sought to gather 150 copies for a book drive, and within 20 minutes, she had secured sponsorship for that many. Now, Bella’s new goal is to reach 1,000 books.
This isn’t Bella’s first endeavor to bring joy to the children of Flint through film. Previously, she raised $16,000 to allow a group of kids to see Black Panther for free, successfully renting an entire theater that accommodated over 150 children. Each attendee received a letter from the #DearFlintKids project, along with comic books featuring diverse heroes, exclusive Black Panther t-shirts, and merchandise. Additionally, she helped provide movie gift cards to 650 kids for the film’s opening weekend.
With her remarkable drive and dedication, Bella Flint is truly making a difference in her community. It’s hard not to wonder if we should be casting our votes for her in the 2043 presidential election. The world could certainly benefit from more young leaders like her.
