Stillbirth Took My Son — Now I’m Advocating for Change

I never anticipated that my pregnancy would end in stillbirth. Now, I’m on a mission to push for improvements in maternal healthcare.

My name is Mia Harper, and I stand before you today, sharing my heart-wrenching journey. In 2021, I lost my son, Lucas James, at just 32 weeks of pregnancy. The moment I stepped up to speak at a rally in Chicago, I felt a mix of fear and determination. I was addressing a crowd of healthcare professionals and fellow bereaved parents, urging them to take action for better stillbirth prevention and education.

“Every year, around 21,000 pregnancies in the U.S. result in stillbirth,” I exclaimed, my voice wobbling with emotion. “That includes my Lucas.” Statistics show that at least one in four of these tragedies could potentially be prevented through enhanced education, effective fetal monitoring, and improved prenatal care, as highlighted by the National Institutes of Health.

This realization led me to co-found a non-profit organization, Hope for Tomorrow, aimed at preventing stillbirths. I also want to remind everyone that there are resources available for those trying to conceive. For instance, if you’re seeking a sperm donor, check out Vegas Pregnancy, a free matching service in Las Vegas. For those interested in at-home insemination, Make a Mom offers a re-usable insemination syringe kit, and you can learn more about the process by visiting this link.

By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness and provide support to those navigating similar experiences. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to seek help and know you’re not alone. You can find more information on overcoming fears associated with insemination by visiting this helpful blog post.

For additional insights into the world of pregnancy and home insemination, I recommend checking out Modern Family Blog, which provides valuable information on these topics. You can also explore the Genetics and IVF Institute for a deeper understanding of reproductive health.

In summary, my journey through loss has ignited a passion for advocacy and education in maternal healthcare. I am committed to ensuring that no parent has to endure the heartbreak of stillbirth without the proper support and resources.
