Women’s Retreats Matter
Friendship among women is truly invaluable. I believe many can relate to the sentiment, “MY FRIENDS ARE AMAZING.” I have cherished friendships that span various phases of my life—elementary school, high school, college, my carefree days of singlehood, and my journey into motherhood. These supportive bonds have been a source of strength, especially during my health challenges later in life, but have enriched my existence through every joy and hardship.
Organizing a simple dinner or drink with friends often feels like attempting to orchestrate a global conference. So, planning a girls’ getaway? Quite the daunting task. After numerous texts and emails, we finally settled on a date and place that worked for four mothers navigating the chaos of raising nine children. Miracles do happen!
I’ve been fortunate to have these particular friends in my life for nearly three decades. Yes, thirty years! These are the kind of friends with whom simply being together creates cherished memories. This recent weekend was no exception. We had more laughter lounging in our hotel room, recalling the wild adventures of our youth, than we ever experienced at any upscale dinner. Who needs a workout when laughter can give your abs a thorough workout, leaving you sore from giggling the next day?
Life is unpredictable, and the paths that lead us to friendship are often serendipitous. We meet friends through shared neighborhoods, schools, or even by chance encounters in dormitory lounges. Sometimes, it’s a pivotal moment in our lives when we feel isolated, whether it’s navigating singlehood or embracing the challenges of motherhood.
Friendships form when the universe aligns, connecting us with those who will support us during both the highs and lows. We may not realize it at the time, but these connections are crucial. We choose to nurture those relationships because of the joy and comfort they provide, whether it’s through tears or laughter.
When we forge friendships in childhood, we rarely anticipate that the hands we once held on the playground will also clasp ours during the toughest moments, such as farewells to loved ones or heartbreak. Those who comfort you after a party snub will also be there to support you through life’s most bittersweet events.
As we grow, we cannot foresee what life will demand from us or the friends we will lean on in times of need. The joy and sorrow that await us are often beyond our comprehension, yet we will need our girlfriends by our sides to navigate the trials of life—whether it’s the challenges of career transitions, the joys and struggles of parenting, or the complexities of relationships.
A health diagnosis can reaffirm the value of these friendships in profound ways. Whether you have one best friend or a circle of many, having friends who enhance your life simply by being present is a gift. Together, we create memories that bring joy, laughter, and sometimes even a little embarrassment.
And hey, what’s a little awkwardness among best friends?
