As summer approaches, the quest for the perfect camp begins. While we’ve already settled on a great camp for my son, the paperwork has me feeling a little frazzled. My daughter, who’s just 7, has expressed interest too, but given her tendency to be upset when we go out without her, we’re opting for a day camp instead. In my search, I stumbled upon a collection of imaginative camps, including Hollywood Stunt Camp, Coding Camp, Race Car Camp, Secret Agent Camp, Shark Camp (in Fiji, no less), Roller Coaster Camp, and Harry Potter Camp—each one sounding like a fantastic adventure.
However, the Harry Potter Camp sparked my creativity, making me want to dream up some camp ideas of my own that my kids would love and that would also give me a break as their devoted but weary mother. Here’s a list of five camps I’d love to see flourish:
Camp Half-Blood (Percy Jackson Camp)
Are your kids engrossed in the Percy Jackson series? While the films have their flaws, the books are a treasure! This camp would divide kids into cabins named after Greek gods, allowing them to engage in epic camp games and learn various skills like metalwork (with Hephaestus), water manipulation (with Poseidon), gardening (with Demeter), or music and prophecy (with Apollo). There’d even be a cabin for the girly girls with Aphrodite and a sporty one for the girls who vibe with Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Plus, my son already sports a Camp Half-Blood shirt—thanks to a Christmas gift from last year!
Phineas and Ferb Camp
Imagine a whole day dedicated to inventing outrageous contraptions, only for them to mysteriously disappear at day’s end! And let’s not forget the catchy camp songs that would accompany such creativity.
Neighborhood Adventure Camp
Honestly, this is what my kids would enjoy the most. With a little organization, they could experience a classic summer. Picture them having breakfast at the local diner, biking around, stopping at the playground, hitting the candy store for a treat, and grabbing lunch at the deli. This camp is essentially a nostalgic return to what summer used to be!
Anti-Gravity Camp
Who wouldn’t love to experience zero gravity? This camp would teach kids how to move effortlessly in a weightless environment and indulge in the delightful challenge of eating snacks while floating, much like those quirky videos from space.
Life Skills Camp
This is the camp I’m rooting for the most! I dream of my children learning practical life skills like cooking, cleaning up their rooms, and doing their laundry. Sure, archery is cool, but when will they ever need that in real life? This camp would be a game changer for me, the ever-busy mom!
