Together as One: How a Cry for Support Built a Community of Love for My Child

I’ve always embraced the wisdom of my mentor who said, “I do not believe in miracles — I rely on them.” Throughout my life, I’ve witnessed various miracles: changes in circumstances, moments of transformation, and experiences of healing. However, the true miracle of community only became evident with the birth of my son, Oliver.

For those unfamiliar with our journey, my name is Jamie, and just five days before Oliver’s arrival, we believed he was perfectly healthy. Coming from a background that reveres nature and practices organic living, I opted for minimal medical intervention. Although I attended regular OB appointments and underwent necessary tests, I declined late-term ultrasounds, trusting that all was well.

It wasn’t until 41 weeks and 3 days into my pregnancy that we decided to have an ultrasound to ensure everything was safe. To our shock, we discovered limb anomalies that left the doctors baffled — and to top it off, our baby was in a breech position! With my home birth plans already set, I found myself rushed into a C-section instead.

When Oliver finally entered the world, we learned that while he developed a healthy set of lungs, a heart, and a brain, he was born without legs and his left arm. His right arm, although present, had fused bones in his hand. This story could easily delve into the emotional turmoil we faced—fear, guilt, and uncertainty—but that isn’t the focus here. Instead, I want to highlight the beautiful journey toward community and connection that unfolded.

Unbeknownst to me when I put my thoughts into words, my heartfelt wish for everyone to embrace Oliver with the same love we felt transformed into an outpouring of support. As a dedicated yoga instructor, my focus has always been on fostering unity and the extraordinary connections we can form when we come together.

Oliver’s arrival in October has already taught many of us the profound strength that love can provide. Given the unexpected nature of his birth, I felt compelled to reach out for help. My call was met with an overwhelming response from a compassionate community. Within mere days of sharing our story, we had raised over $50,000 to assist with Oliver’s future needs through a GoFundMe campaign. Donations poured in, ranging from diapers to therapy services, and prayers filled the air.

Friends organized sound healings, while others connected us with their churches for blessings. A talented photographer gifted us precious memories, and even police officers visited to hold our little one. Each gesture, no matter how small, reinforced our belief in the goodness of humanity and the power of connection.

At every turn, I was met with reminders of life’s mysterious ways, all leading us to a fundamental truth: we are all in this together. Beyond financial support, Oliver needs what we all crave: reminders of health, happiness, and wholeness. He needs the love and support that comes from a community united.

As I write this, I’m reiterating my call for assistance. To sustain this journey, we must resist the temptation to revert to self-doubt or blame when faced with challenges. Oliver has shown me that vulnerability is a strength and that asking for help can be one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and others.

We often go through life pretending we have it all figured out, but if we were more open about our struggles and needs, we would create more opportunities to support one another. Loving one another and embracing our true selves brings fulfillment. As we enter this holiday season, we offer our deepest gratitude.

From our family to yours,
Jamie, Liam, and Baby Oliver
