Dear Daughter,

Oh, my dear, what a remarkable era you are growing up in. Women today have unprecedented opportunities. Together, we’ve witnessed a woman run for president (and succeed), and for the first time, I saw that spark in your eyes that perhaps all my encouragement—those words telling you that you can be anything—might actually hold truth.

Something significant is unfolding. Doors are opening for you that were once firmly shut. The barriers that have held us back are beginning to crumble. Long-standing biases that were rarely challenged are finally being addressed. Men who have acted unjustly towards women are being held accountable. A shift in perspective is on the horizon, even if it is gradual.

Women are stepping into the spotlight. Yet, we still grapple with familiar struggles. While we may have a presence on that stage, acceptance isn’t universal—not yet. Daily, I observe women being judged for qualities unrelated to their abilities. We face this scrutiny, and even more disheartening, we sometimes inflict it upon one another. Although we can achieve anything, society still seems to expect perfection—perfect hair, a slim figure, and a soft, unassertive demeanor.

I realize this may be perplexing for you. It’s perplexing for me as well. In a world that constantly presents misleading metrics of worth—our appearance, social media popularity, financial status, and even our living conditions—I want you to grasp a crucial truth that I’m only beginning to understand:

None of these external validations truly matter if you cannot find solace within yourself, because ultimately, that is where your true essence lies. The only genuine sanctuary you possess is within. While your father and I laid the groundwork, you are the one who has constructed this home. You have filled it with your choices, dreams, and the illuminating spirit that is uniquely yours. We may come and go, but the inhabitants of that space are you and your personal beliefs.

From this secure place, you will rise to greatness. It is from here that you will make your mark on the world and instigate change.

So here’s my request: When uncertainty or fear tries to infiltrate your thoughts, remember that I am proud of all you’ve achieved and all you have yet to accomplish. But know this: as your mother, my love for you is unwavering, regardless of your achievements. I love you, no matter what.

This is the kind of love I hope you can nurture within yourself. A love that is steadfast, unyielding, and impervious to the superficial judgments regarding your appearance or social standing. It’s the kind of love I wish I had cultivated in myself, and it is the most valuable gift I can offer you. I may not be a perfect mother, still learning the ropes, but I can provide this foundation for you. Stand tall on my shoulders, darling, and take your place on that stage—you belong there.

Love you always,
Mom
