The World Is Intimidating, But We Cannot Let Fear Triumph

In today’s world, fear seems to loom large. Headlines filled with news of terrorist attacks, mass shootings, and other violent incidents can make us feel like danger is everywhere. It’s as if no location is immune to the threat of sudden chaos or terror.

This perception is exactly what those who spread hate and violence want us to believe. Our fears empower them, making them feel as though their actions are effective. We must not allow them to think they are winning.

In reality, the situation is not as dire as it appears. Despite the constant stream of alarming news, we are living in one of the safest periods in human history, particularly in the United States. It’s crucial to remember this when faced with attempts to instill fear, whether through violent actions or sensationalized narratives. We must not surrender to our anxieties.

Fear and hatred are intertwined, a fact most sensible individuals recognize. Conversely, love and bravery are powerful allies in combating extremism. If we genuinely wish for love to prevail, we must choose courage. Giving in to fear only strengthens those who perpetuate hate.

Of course, the stakes feel even higher when our children are involved. It’s one thing to navigate the world with courage ourselves; it’s another to guide our kids along the same path. The thought of being in the wrong place at the wrong time can be paralyzing. But I often ponder the opposite: How could I forgive myself if I let fear rob my children of experiencing life? That’s no way to live, especially when the actual risks are minimal compared to everyday activities. For instance, driving is statistically riskier than many fears we harbor.

While I may feel slightly uneasy in crowded places, I refuse to let fear dictate my choices. The truth is that opportunities for harm exist everywhere, yet over 99.99% of the time, they go unused. For example, during our twelve years in the suburbs of Denver, my family frequently took the light rail into the city. Though my mind sometimes wandered to potential threats, the reality is that millions safely used the service without incident. In fact, data reveals that Americans are more than twelve times more likely to die from choking than from a terrorist attack.

The reality is that anyone can fall victim to violence at any moment. Yet, the vast majority of people are kind and peaceful, desiring only to live harmoniously. We must not allow the fear of rare events to hinder our ability to live fully, regardless of how frightening the news may appear—especially since inciting fear is often the intention behind such events.

I refuse to let fear take control, and I will instill this mindset in my children. We will continue to use public transport, visit museums, and attend community events. I will teach them to be cautious and prepared when necessary, but not to succumb to paranoia about potential dangers.

I will encourage them to confront fear and hatred whenever they arise, choosing instead love and bravery.
