In a society often clouded by negativity and harsh words, one simple email completely transformed my perspective on compassion and kindness.
My daughter, Lily, was born two months early and faces numerous physical challenges. Ultrasounds revealed her clubbed feet and other joint issues while she was still in the womb. Her wrists turn downward with limited movement, her knees remain locked, and her left arm has more mobility than her right. These conditions have resulted in delays in both fine and gross motor skills. After nearly two years of dedicated occupational and physical therapy, she can lift her right arm about halfway, despite the ongoing struggle to grasp small items with her delicate fingers. We often overlook the ease of using two functional hands; for Lily, this is a continuous lesson in utility.
Her legs, largely immobile, have often hindered her ability to move. Instead of crawling, she developed a unique army crawl, relying heavily on her stronger left arm while dragging her lower body. Now, at age 2, we work on her walking skills daily. While she can only maintain her balance for a brief count of three before stumbling, she is a determined little fighter. Braces aid her ankles, yet without them, her feet lack the strength to support her tiny frame. Although she faces obstacles, Lily tackles each challenge at her own pace.
As her mother, it’s heartbreaking to see Lily unable to run freely with her friends, join us at the dinner table, or dress herself like other toddlers. My worries about sending her to school fill my mind with fears of bullying and exclusion. However, when I drop her off, I notice her classmates are still too young to perceive her differences, their innocence allowing them to appreciate her vibrant spirit, her cheerful smile, and her eagerness to make friends. Lily shows no shame in her challenges or embarrassment about her braces, and I wish this blissful acceptance could last forever.
Then came the day I received a heartwarming email from my brother-in-law, a teacher who shared a delightful observation about my niece, Sarah.
“Hello everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to express my joy in Sarah’s recent behavior. She has been a tremendous help to a classmate with special needs. Her kindness, patience, and maturity have truly shone through. Watching their friendship develop has been a highlight for me, as Sarah effortlessly balances her own learning while supporting her new friend. If you have a moment, ask her about their time together!
Best,
1st Grade Teacher”
Sarah’s heart has always been full of love for animals and children, but I was struck by her innate compassion. At just 6 years old, she embodies kindness that many adults often forget to display.
We tend to focus on appearances and gossip about those who stand out. We chase material possessions to gain respect, often losing sight of what truly matters. In contrast, Sarah’s actions showcased a profound understanding of empathy. She recognized a need and stepped in without expecting anything in return, treating another child with dignity and warmth.
This small incident filled me with hope that as Lily continues her journey in school, she will encounter peers like Sarah. I imagine a future where classmates offer to help Lily when she struggles to carry her books or invite her to join in games, ensuring she feels included and valued just as much as any other child.
While my worries as a mother may never completely fade, that email eased my anxiety. It reminded me that children possess an incredible capacity for kindness that often surpasses our own expectations. Perhaps my hopes for Lily’s future can indeed become a reality.
