Dear Senator Thompson,
You have long been a stalwart figure in American politics, dedicating your life to public service. Your commitment to our nation is commendable, and I appreciate your sacrifices. As you navigate your own health challenges, I wish you a full and speedy recovery.
You know firsthand what it means to face illness and to battle against the odds, just as countless Americans are doing today. You understand the deep concern that parents feel when their children are unwell, how we reassure them that everything will be alright because we will do whatever it takes to ensure their well-being.
The bond between a parent and child is profound. From the moment they enter our lives, they become an integral part of our hearts. We are always there for them—bandaging scrapes, seeking answers from doctors for mysterious ailments, and lifting them up when they stumble. This is the essence of good parenting.
As a parent, a person living with chronic illness, and a concerned citizen, I’m reaching out to you to ask that you embrace the courage and independent spirit you are known for by opposing the Graham-Cassidy bill, or any iteration of Trumpcare. Instead, I urge you to collaborate with your colleagues to enhance the Affordable Care Act, which has been a lifeline for millions, including families like mine. Most Americans are in favor of such improvements. Please consider leading this vital effort.
Life is unpredictable, filled with unforeseen challenges. Just a year ago, I faced a harrowing health crisis that changed my life forever. I was diagnosed with multiple pulmonary embolisms, a condition that could have been fatal. Thanks to my health insurance, I was able to receive immediate care that saved my life. I had three days in the hospital, where skilled medical professionals provided exemplary care. Because of the protections offered by the Affordable Care Act, I could continue treatment with a specialist who guided my recovery.
My son has his own health battles, dealing with severe allergies, asthma, and recurrent croup. He often requires medical attention to stay healthy. Thanks to the healthcare system and lawmakers like you, he has the support he needs. As a parent, witnessing your child struggle to breathe is terrifying and transformative. It pushes you to advocate fiercely for their healthcare, ensuring that financial burdens don’t jeopardize their well-being.
I am advocating not only for my family but for countless others who are counting on you to make the right decision. The memory of your decisive thumbs down to Trumpcare on July 28, 2017, remains vivid for many of us. It was a moment of hope that resonated across the nation. I will share this story with my children, showing them how you stood firm for families like ours.
When a nation faces turmoil, it’s up to its leaders to support and uplift their citizens. Thank you for being one of those leaders. I implore you to stand with us once more by voting against the Graham-Cassidy bill and its variants. Healthcare, especially for those battling illness or disability, should not resemble a battlefield. Please show us your strength again and help us secure a future where families can thrive without fear.
Our hopes rest in your hands, and we are counting on you to act responsibly.
Sincerely,
Emily Carter
