A few months ago, my partner surprised me with a thoughtful anniversary gift that truly reflected how well he understands me. While some may frown at receiving a cleaning device, I felt nothing but joy when I unwrapped a Roomba.
I’ve never been one for jewelry or fancy fragrances; what speaks to my heart is having a cleaner home. And my new companion, Roomba, knows just how to communicate that love language.
Living in a modest-sized house with two young children, two cats, and a dog, I’ve come to realize that my floors are magnets for pet hair, crumbs, and all sorts of unwelcome debris. Despite a no-shoe policy indoors, I often find myself regretting the choice to go barefoot as I step on remnants from our busy lives. Cleaning my feet is not how I want to spend my afternoons.
To maintain a semblance of cleanliness, I used to dedicate about 40 minutes each day to vacuuming. While I appreciate the results, the task itself is far from enjoyable. So, naturally, I would let the floors go. And once that happens, I tend to neglect all cleaning—like avoiding a high-maintenance friend when you don’t have the energy to deal with them.
But ever since I invited Roomba into my life, it’s been like finding a way to dodge that high-maintenance friend. My floors are now consistently tidy, and while it’s not a sparkling clean, it’s a significant improvement that I cherish.
You know those posts on Pinterest that suggest doing a quick 10-minute tidy-up? I could never remember to do that. However, Roomba follows a schedule I set. I prefer it to clean while I’m out running errands, which gives me the motivation to quickly pick up toys, gather stray laundry, and tidy up the living room.
It’s like a cycle of cleanliness. If you give a mom a Roomba, she’ll start picking up the floor. While clearing the space, she’ll notice the remotes under the couch and put them away, which leads her to clean the sticky mess on the coffee table. This chain reaction continues, and suddenly, my home is in order with minimal effort.
Some nights, I simply set Roomba to work and unwind, knowing my floors are being taken care of. On other nights, I may shove some clutter into a basket, but every morning greets me with clean floors.
And let’s not forget my trusty mop, Braava. While it’s not as high-tech as Roomba, it effectively mops my floors with just a press of a button. Whether I want a wet or damp mop, it gets the job done without me lifting a finger—aside from charging its battery.
I’m more than willing to embrace our robot overlords if they continue to keep my floors spotless. They’ve finally transformed me into the mom I always aspired to be—the one with a clean house.
