4-H: More Than Just a Farm Club

When I was younger, my perception of 4-H was limited to the girls in my school who were passionate about horses. I knew it was related to farming and animals, but that was about it. However, after relocating to a new town and observing what my daughters’ friends were doing within their 4-H clubs, I was delighted to discover that it encompasses so much more. The four “H”s represent Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, and the variety of projects available to kids spans all these essential areas of life.

Our local 4-H club has provided opportunities in photography, cooking, baking, sewing, and even small engine repair. Kids can showcase their artwork, crafts, photography, and LEGO creations at the fair in the 4-H barn. One year, my daughters even created outfits for a fashion review, showcasing their creativity through another 4-H project.

Of course, there’s a significant animal component as well. Friends of my children have gained extensive knowledge about caring for animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, and sheep. I was amazed to learn how much there is to understand to effectively show animals at the fair. The kids are like walking encyclopedias, answering judges’ questions about animal care, breeds, and much more. Who knew there was so much to learn about chicken breeds?

4-H has evolved beyond being merely a farm club, adapting its programs to address the diverse needs of today’s youth. For instance, a recent NPR story highlighted a 4-H educator in Prince George’s County, Maryland, who runs a program focused on helping teens build healthy relationships. Participants discuss themes such as loyalty, trust, and communication, empowering them to navigate their social interactions.

Jennifer Sirangelo, President and CEO of the National 4-H Council, emphasizes that the health program—encompassing nutrition, physical activity, and emotional well-being—aims to foster confidence in kids and equip them to face life’s challenges. This November, 4-H will introduce a relationship program for LGBTQ freshmen at the University of Maryland, addressing the unique issues faced by LGBTQ individuals.

Clearly, 4-H has something for everyone. While two of my kids haven’t shown any interest in raising animals, they have enjoyed displaying their arts and crafts at the fair and engaging in various community service projects organized by the group throughout the year.

In our small town’s 4-H club, I have been moved by the genuine commitment to service displayed by both adult and teen leaders. During a recent meeting, as the kids discussed topics for their demonstrations—another surprising focus I discovered—our 4-H leader encouraged them to “listen well to one another and to encourage one another’s gifts.” I was nearly brought to tears by such an inspiring message.

I recognize that 4-H chapters can vary widely across the country, with some being exceptional and others less so. Nevertheless, the core mission of 4-H is commendable, and the range of activities offered extends far beyond the horses and chickens I once associated it with.
