A Utah father recently garnered attention for creating an impressive $1,500 costume for his young daughter, Sophie, so she could embody Wonder Woman during a memorable birthday photoshoot. Now, he is using his talents to honor what he calls the “true superheroes” among us.

Jake Thompson has taken six courageous children coping with various disabilities and illnesses and transformed them into iconic members of the Justice League for a stunning photoshoot. Each child proudly posed as characters like Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Cyborg, and Flash. Thompson aimed to highlight their struggles as strengths rather than weaknesses.

Inspiration Behind the Project

Inspired by the overwhelming response to his daughter’s Wonder Woman shoot, Thompson decided to seek out real-life heroes. “Parents reached out to me, sharing stories of their children battling cancer or other challenges, and I knew I had to spotlight these incredible kids,” he explained.

With the help of his wife, Maria, they connected with families and carefully matched each child to a specific superhero based on their personal journey. Costume designer Lydia Jensen joined the project, generously dedicating three weeks to creating costumes that would bring these heroes to life. The entire process took about two months, filled with late nights and heartfelt dedication.

Meet the Superheroes

“What I love most is that we paired each child with a superhero that reflected their story,” Thompson shared. For instance, Alex, who was chosen to portray Superman, is waiting for a heart transplant and has only half a heart. This connection made him the perfect embodiment of the character.

Alex, 8, was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and has endured multiple surgeries. Similarly, Noah, a five-year-old diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, posed as Batman. Known for his resilience, he never complains about his battles and loves the character not just for his strength but also for his wealth.

Ella, who donned the Wonder Woman costume, was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma at just three years old. In a touching moment, her sister, Sophie, passed on the Wonder Woman “torch” to her, creating a memory that brought tears to Thompson’s eyes.

Five-year-old Ryan, who has prosthetic legs due to Omphalocele, embodies the spirit of Cyborg. “Seeing Ryan, I was blown away by his strength. He insisted on learning to walk with prosthetic legs without help,” Thompson remarked.

In the lineup is also two-year-old Mateo, battling Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia. Despite a recent round of chemotherapy, he showed up for the photoshoot with immense energy. His brother aided him with the Aquaman poses, a fitting match given their Polynesian heritage.

Completing the superhero squad is 7-year-old Liam, who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and boundless energy. He was transformed into the Flash, with Thompson emphasizing how Liam’s high energy is actually a superpower, rather than a challenge.

Capturing Strength and Joy

Throughout the experience, Thompson was deeply moved by the kids’ strength and joy, even right after undergoing difficult treatments. “It was incredible to witness these young warriors stepping into their roles with enthusiasm,” he said.

The result of this project is not just a collection of breathtaking photographs but also inspiring stories captured in a heartfelt video shared on Thompson’s social media. The courage and determination displayed by these children is truly uplifting, and Thompson hopes to convey that our vulnerabilities can be sources of strength.
