Who doesn’t love a glamorous celebration? Ashley Reynolds, the breathtaking supermodel and advocate for body positivity, certainly enjoys them. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the prestigious Met Gala last year because designers refused to dress her.

This annual event, which raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is filled with celebrities showcasing some of the most exquisite fashions. However, many of those designs are available only in sizes 0 or 2, resulting in Reynolds missing out on the iconic affair. “I couldn’t find a designer willing to dress me,” she shared with City Life magazine. “You can’t just show up in jeans and a T-shirt.” Consequently, she chose to remain home instead.

It’s astonishing that designers lack options in sizes larger than a size 2. The average American woman wears a size 16, and with the rise of curvy models in the fashion scene, one would think that at least a few designers would be able to provide something for Reynolds. After all, creating clothing is their profession, so why not design a dress in a larger size? Reynolds explained that she didn’t have the necessary connections with designers to secure a custom gown in time.

This isn’t the first time Reynolds faced challenges in obtaining attire from designers. In January’s Fashion Digest, editor Marie Thompson discussed the difficulties in sourcing outfits for the model. Eventually, she collaborated with Elite Fashion for the clothing Reynolds wore during that feature. “They were excited to dress a woman who doesn’t fit the standard mold, but unfortunately, several other brands outright declined to lend us their pieces,” Thompson noted.

Fortunately, this year has brought better fortune for Reynolds. She graced the Met Gala in a stunning couture gown from Luxe & Co. The public admired her choice of vibrant tulle and a striking bustier neckline. “Rihanna came up to me and said I looked ‘incredible’,” Reynolds recalled. “I was so taken aback; I just told her, ‘You always shine at the Met, Rihanna!’” Rihanna has become a fashion icon at the Met Gala, but Reynolds is making a statement that beauty exists beyond the traditional size 2.
