Jimmy Thompson, known for his witty news commentary, recently took to social media to share a heartwarming update on his son, who has been in the news for very personal reasons. In early May, during an emotional segment on his show, he revealed that he and his wife, Sarah Johnson, welcomed their second child, Oliver James (Ollie) Thompson. However, shortly after his birth, doctors discovered a serious health issue.

“The room started to fill up with more doctors, nurses, and equipment,” Jimmy recounted during his May broadcast. “They found that he wasn’t getting enough oxygen in his blood. It was a terrifying experience.” It was quickly diagnosed that Ollie was born with congenital heart disease. Thankfully, he underwent surgery right away, but Jimmy shared tearfully, “He will need another surgery in a few months, and one more when he’s a teenager.”

Fast forward to Friday, and both Jimmy and Sarah posted charming photos of Ollie to celebrate his progress. “Ollie is three months old today and thriving,” Jimmy tweeted. “Thanks for all the love & support, and please remind your Congress representatives that every child deserves quality healthcare like Ollie received.”

According to the Children’s Heart Foundation, congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, affecting nearly one in every 100 babies, which equates to around 40,000 infants born in the U.S. annually. Babies with congenital heart disease may experience various health complications including growth and eating challenges, developmental delays, and heart rhythm issues.

During his heartfelt monologue in May, Jimmy expressed, “We’ve been taught that we live in the greatest country, yet for years, millions had no access to health insurance. Before 2014, if a baby was born with congenital heart disease like my son, there was a real chance they’d never get health coverage due to a preexisting condition.” He emphasized, “If your baby is at risk of dying when it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money your family makes.” His impassioned plea to Congress focused on the importance of preserving the Affordable Care Act, stating, “No parent should have to choose whether they can afford to save their child’s life.”

It’s comforting to see little Ollie doing so well, and let’s hope that Congress takes Jimmy’s message to heart.
