Last week, Carla Jensen from Ontario took to Facebook to recount the ordeal. While enjoying a family dinner featuring BBQ chicken, things took a distressing turn when her son, Noah, started crying in pain. “Just minutes after eating, Noah began to complain about something stuck in his throat,” she wrote. After checking the remaining chicken, her husband discovered a bristle embedded in it, which was later confirmed by an X-ray.
During their two-hour hospital visit, Noah was gagging and distressed. Ultimately, he underwent surgery to remove two metal bristles. “Watching my son suffer and feeling helpless was the worst 24 hours of my life. This was entirely preventable,” Carla shared. “We even have a wooden BBQ grill cleaner still in its packaging that we meant to use.”
Although Noah is recovering well, other individuals who accidentally swallow these metal bristles might not be as fortunate. Injuries primarily occur in the mouth and throat, but there are rare cases of stomach and intestinal damage as well, as highlighted by a study published in the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery journal in 2016.
In reality, such injuries are not extremely common—only about 1,700 Americans visited emergency rooms between 2002 and 2014 due to wire bristle ingestion. However, one in four of those affected required hospitalization, indicating that if it happens to you, it could lead to serious health concerns. Moreover, the available statistics might not fully represent the true number of grill brush injuries since they only account for ER visits, excluding urgent care or outpatient clinics.
