Dear Mark,

Dear Mark,low cost IUI

I truly sympathize with you. Your athletic journey has been impressive, with minimal injuries—at least none that required surgery until now. Aging can be incredibly tough, and the road to recovery will present its own set of challenges, leaving you less active for a while.

But, honestly, I’m feeling a bit more for myself here.

We have three little ones, the eldest being just four years old, and a two-story home to manage. These realities won’t change while you’re recovering from your surgery this week. As you lounge in a drug-induced stupor binge-watching shows, I’ll be wrangling our kids.

This recovery will certainly be different than it would have been pre-kids. Back in the day, I might have taken time off work, set up a bell for you to ring when you needed something, rented a stack of movies, and left heartfelt notes around the house. This time, however, you’ll have to wake yourself up for those pain meds. I’ll leave some water and snacks on your nightstand, and I’ll catch up with you around 7:30 p.m. Good luck! I didn’t abandon nursing school just because of my struggles with anatomy; I also realized that compassion isn’t my strongest suit.

And if you happen to have a secret partner I’m unaware of, now would be a good moment to confess. I’d grant her full amnesty because I could really use the extra hands over the next few weeks.

Your Future Athletic Pursuits

Now, let’s address your future athletic pursuits. This injury occurred while you were playing in an adult flag football league. There are a few issues with that: 1) You didn’t play football as a child, 2) we reside in Texas, where football is practically a religion, and 3) you were competing against players in their twenties.

Whoever claims that thirty is the new twenty clearly hasn’t tried playing contact sports. Thirty doesn’t play.

There are numerous ways to stay fit that don’t involve risking injury. We have access to running trails, a gym membership, and three energetic kids you can chase after. Moving forward, if you could stick to activities that involve running straight ahead, that would be ideal. You can sign up for races, participate in triathlons, or even take part in the MS 150! But if it involves dodging, competing with younger players, or keeping score, the answer is a resounding no.

We’ll navigate through this together, but as a small favor, if someone asks how they can assist, please mention that they can bring dinner, help with the kids, or give you a lift to work.

With love,
Your Wife
