In the whirlwind of daily life, I find my schedule increasingly packed, and my sanctuary—the bathroom—has become a shared space. Adorned with a stool for the kids to reach the sink and a shower curtain that practically shouts “family chaos,” it’s not exactly the peaceful retreat I once imagined. Moments to unwind with a steaming bath are rare, and when the opportunity arises, I seize it with open arms.
I gather my essentials: a flickering candle, a plush bath pillow, and a freshly laundered towel—well, not entirely fresh, but it has dried off my kids after their baths. I find a tray to rest my wine glass and book, pouring the wine a bit too generously as I search my bedroom for that elusive novel I started eight months ago. It’s somewhere in this room; perhaps it’s hiding in the diaper bag? That would be absurd, considering my toddler’s knack for tossing everything into the hamper like it’s some magical portal to Narnia.
As I flick on the bathroom light, the harsh fluorescent glow threatens to ruin my atmosphere. Thankfully, I can substitute it with a soft glow from a Spiderman nightlight, casting a gentle ambiance. Lighting my candle, which I often use to mask the fridge odors or create an inviting kitchen scent for guests, I notice its label promises “Homemade Cookies.” In reality, it smells more like “Vanilla AF.”
Pulling back the shower curtain reveals a bit of chaos left by the last bath—a vibrant array of bath crayon drawings and a drain that’s less than pristine. I toss the slimy toys into the sink and grab the cleaning spray, inhaling the fumes that, oddly enough, are somewhat soothing. After a quick scrub, I turn on the water, only to discover I’m out of bath bombs or salts. However, I do find a bottle of Paw Patrol bubble bath. I turn Chase’s head upside down, watching the liquid cascade into the tub, creating a delightful cloud of foam. Between the fruity scent, the vanilla candle, and the cleaning spray, I’m already feeling a pleasant buzz.
Stripping off my maternity tank top and leggings that have seen better days, I toss them into the hamper—only to discover my long-lost book nestled inside. Of course, it would be there, courtesy of my little one’s “cleaning” efforts.
Finally ready, I step into the bath, greeted by lukewarm water that reminds me of the dishwasher I ran earlier. No matter; I can always add hot water later. As I take a sip of my chardonnay, I’m startled when my child bursts into the bathroom, declaring, “I need to go now!” Once settled on the toilet, he inquires about my activities and requests to join me in the bubbly oasis. I explain that this is my time to recharge; otherwise, my grumpiness will escalate.
“But you’re already really grumpy and yell all the time,” he retorts. Touché, little one.
Back in the tub, sipping my wine and flipping through my book, I turn on the faucet to replenish the hot water. The remnants of bubbles begin to reappear as the temperature rises, and my body starts to relax. I finish my wine and try to recall the last chapter I read. The house feels serene, and as my eyes grow heavy, I wonder if my partner has managed to get the kids to bed. Eventually, the bubbles fade, and I reluctantly release the drain lever with my toe.
Next time, I might just opt for a nap instead.

In summary, life as a parent can often feel chaotic, especially when seeking moments of solitude. However, even amidst the noise, finding a little time for oneself—whether it be through a warm bubble bath or a glass of wine—can provide much-needed respite.
