You won’t want to miss this amusing daddy-daughter debate over the number four! As any parent knows, there are moments when you, as an adult, find yourself locked in a discussion of facts with a toddler. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve ended conversations with something like, “I understand your enthusiasm for the notion that squares aren’t really four-sided, but they are, and I’m in my thirties while you’re just three! Why are we even having this discussion?” Regrettably, I haven’t been able to capture these exchanges on film. Thankfully, one mom recently did.
NTD Television shared a video from @JukinVideo featuring a dad going back and forth with his little girl over whether the number four exists. This two-minute clip showcases the father saying, “No, it’s one-two-three-four-five,” while his daughter firmly counters, “No! It’s one-two-three-five!” Parents everywhere will likely reminisce about similar moments when they’ve had to reiterate undeniable truths to someone who still struggles with zippers.
You can’t help but admire her determination. One viewer commented, “She’s so cute and convincing that I started to second-guess my counting… 1,2,3,4(?),5??? Ummmm. Yes! Yes??” Her confidence is commendable. However, most parents with headstrong daughters will agree that while we cherish their tenacity, it can also be quite exhausting as they grow into their teens. There’s only so much a parent can handle!
You have to feel for the dad, who seems to be a teacher, as he exclaims, “How are you going to tell me? I teach this every day.” At this point, he’s so desperate to convince her that he resorts to referencing his professional experience. When a little one is adamant that you’re mistaken, it’s hard not to want to present your credentials and say, “Look at this! I have a degree in economics. Do you know what we use in economics? Numbers!” Before you know it, you’re sharing stories about your college internships and calling colleagues to validate your expertise—and at that moment, you realize you’ve already lost the argument.
Toward the end of the video, the father, exasperated, states, “You’re skipping four! You can’t just leave it out!” before surrendering with a dramatic hand gesture. That’s when the mother intervenes, saying, “Mia, count to four.” Mia responds with “One-two-three-four,” accepting her defeat with a grin. Just like that, she quickly moves on to the next distraction. Kids can be something else!
Kudos to her dad for holding back from exclaiming, “I told you so!” and high-fiving the mom; I might have struggled to do the same. Of course, my partner has a habit of singing, “Dad is the champion, my friends… And Dad keeps on fighting till the end…” whenever he wins a game of Uno, so I should probably just stay out of it.
This couple exemplifies patience, lighthearted parenting, and the journey of adulthood. We applaud them for sharing this delightful video with us.
