I’m genuinely excited that you will soon become a part of our family, but there are a few things I’d like to share before we raise a toast.
First and foremost, I am his mother, and it’s important to acknowledge that before he was your partner, he was my son. One day, you too will understand the profound nature of motherhood—how it can feel like both a privilege and a challenge that never truly ends, even as children grow up. I’ve never been great at letting go, but I promise to do my best for all of us. Please keep this in mind if I seem a bit overbearing at times.
As our youngest child, we might have indulged your future husband a tad too much, so he can be a bit of a handful. You probably already noticed that he has a penchant for getting his way, often employing those irresistible puppy dog eyes. I do apologize for starting that habit when he was just a toddler. If he pushes his luck, don’t hesitate to give him a gentle nudge back to reality.
Now, let’s address a small issue—he tends to be a bit messy. I take full responsibility for this; I always felt it was my duty to keep the house tidy, which meant he and his siblings didn’t have many chores. While I tried to teach them the value of cleanliness, as with many aspects of parenting, some lessons stick better than others. Picking up his socks off the floor was never my favorite task, and I can only imagine it won’t be yours either.
On a more serious note, I once overheard him telling a friend that he’s allergic to cats. This is, in fact, a complete fabrication. He suffered a rather traumatic encounter with a neighbor’s cat when he was a child, and now he’s terrified of them. So if you’re a cat lover, just keep this little tidbit in mind.
But let’s not dwell on the negatives! He’s genuinely kind, hardworking, respectful, and possesses a wonderful sense of humor. You may know this already, but he also has some hidden gems worth mentioning. For starters, he’s not picky about food at all. Whether you whip up a gourmet meal or just pop something in the microwave, he’ll consider it a feast! And don’t worry about keeping the house in pristine condition—he’s laid-back about tidiness. Plus, he’s not one for outdoor adventures or errand-running, which means you’ll have plenty of time to indulge in your own activities, whether it’s solo shopping or a mini getaway. He’ll be right there on the couch waiting for you when you return.
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the day my youngest would settle down and embrace adulthood, and I’m thrilled that you will be the one to help him along that journey. If you ever need to talk or vent, remember I’m just a call away.
Welcome to the family!
With love,
Your Future Mother-in-Law
