Since 1999, Thomas Green has been sharing his passion for knitting with the world. Now, as the 2017 Crafter of the Year, he’s capturing hearts online with his stunning handmade sweaters that depict famous landmarks. Thomas’s unique approach has recently gone viral, showcasing his joyful spirit and creativity through photographs of himself wearing these vibrant sweaters at the actual locations they represent.
His stunning creations were first shared on a popular social media platform, gaining significant attention and countless shares. The Baltimore-based knitter is now receiving interview requests and fan letters from around the globe. However, his knitting journey started quite humbly years ago.
“I picked up knitting in March 1999, initially crafting a couple of solid-colored sweaters from patterns,” Thomas explained in an interview with a local outlet. The following year, he decided to push his skills further by creating his own design without a pattern. Since then, he has completed an impressive 103 sweaters, each showcasing various stunning places, from the serene Bahai Gardens to the ancient Stonehenge.
“The last two sweaters I made were inspired by my trip to Israel in December,” Thomas shared. Each of his colorful creations takes about a month to complete. “I find inspiration from anything that strikes my eye, whether it’s breathtaking scenery or specific landmarks,” he added.
Interestingly, the idea of taking pictures in front of these iconic sites only came to him later in his knitting journey. “I have images of myself wearing 91 out of the 103 sweaters at the landmarks or similar sceneries, and I hope to achieve this for all of them, although some will require traveling to different continents,” he stated.
Thomas doesn’t limit himself to well-known tourist destinations. His creativity also draws from diverse sources, including nature, wildlife, and even cultural events. “I’ve knitted pieces for every Jewish holiday, starting with a Sukkot sweater and later creating several for Hanukkah,” he noted.
Currently, he is working on two new projects: one featuring the fictional California Raisins for an upcoming themed dance and another honoring Martin Luther King Jr. for the upcoming holiday. “I can’t wait to show them off,” he said enthusiastically.
With the recent surge in interest, Thomas has received numerous requests for custom sweaters. “I have fans worldwide eager for their own pieces, but the reality is that each sweater takes about a month to make,” he explained. “I can’t turn myself into a sweater factory,” he joked, although it seems like a delightful endeavor.
