In recent months, various major retailers, like Target and Costco, have introduced sensory-friendly events aimed at supporting individuals with autism. However, many of these initiatives have been limited to a select few locations, leaving out those who reside elsewhere. In a commendable move, Chuck E. Cheese, in collaboration with the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), is broadening its “Sensory Sensitive Sundays” program to encompass an additional 54 venues.
Previously, Chuck E. Cheese had already established “Sensory Sensitive Sundays” in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Glen Burnie, Maryland. Now, they are excited to announce the addition of sensory-friendly events in every location across New York, New Jersey, and New England, totaling 54 locations.
Upcoming Sensory Friendly Sundays
The inaugural “Sensory Friendly Sunday” took place on January 8, from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to the opening for the general public. Following this, sensory-sensitive Sundays will occur on the first Sunday of each month, including February 5, March 5, April 2, and May 7 at all participating venues.
Adjustments for a Comfortable Experience
During these special events, Chuck E. Cheese will make several adjustments to create a more accommodating environment. This includes:
- Dimming the lights
- Silencing music
- Preventing costumed characters, including the beloved Chuck E. Cheese mascot, from roaming the area
Additionally, families will be permitted to bring outside food for children with specific dietary needs, and staff will receive sensory-friendly training to better assist guests.
